Car will not idle

aftermarket carter performance series carb (afb). maybe the base gasket isn't sealing that modern carb to the antique intake correctly. vacuum passages under carb might be overhanging the intake mounting cast for the original carb. hope the car was bought right.
He does have one or more vacuum leaks. The carb being a generic motors design has a port for the power brakes, that was not plugged correctly, also the factory port in the intake from the picture is not sealed. Take that with the intake and I am surprised it even runs at all.
Also he needs to run a better fuel line, running hose over an exhaust manifold is one crispy car waiting to happen.

it obviously has several issues. maybe some not so obvious. i'm certain the pictures are very helpful. like i say, i just hope he got it for the right price. it is going need a little sorting out.

I hooked up the trans linkage today, 5 minutes. Shifts through the gears OK...1-2 is just right, but 2-3 is a little too quick. I'm not sure the kickdown adjustment is dialed in just yet, but the manual explains it nicely. Thanks for the pics and the link to the service manual. I also fixed the idle by removing the mixture screws and blowing brake cleaner then compressed air through them, then adjusting the idle mixture. Perfect idle. Took it for a drive; ran well.

Thanks to the members who offered constructive ideas.

I appreciate it!

Also, about the off-center steering shaft... firstly, the car drives and steers just fine. What is weird is that there is plenty of room for the shaft to be straight without contacting the exhaust manifold.

I need to see why it is not straight. Maybe something is worn?

about the off-center steering shaft
wonder the if the column's correct for the vehicle? the end doesn't look like the one in 'tech55's pictures or like my '65 300. pictures of it's alignment relative to the master cyl. might help. or the interior, under dash at firewall. nice about the idle circuits being the issue. i love simple solutions.

Frank, You can align the column easy, loosen the two upper mount nuts just enough to move, the loosen the three bolts that hold the lower mount to the firewall. Position the lower mount to straighten out the shaft and tighten up the bolts. 30 min job

By the way, it has to be a 66 column. 65 has cable shift, 67 and newer have the collapsible feature built in, different upper mounting.

Inspect everything very carefully, please. I have seen a couple of instances where the box broke its mounting at the frame on a couple 70's Mopars... you wouldn't believe how little "feel" it gave through the steering wheel. Look for cracks, check the box mounting bolts for torque, they can loosen... then please follow traintech55's advice and reset the column straight.

There are always low quality body shops, but this car lived through an era when an idiot with a big hammer selection and a stick welder was doing the frame repairs. I once owned a 73 charger that had a giant washer welded to the k frame as a motor mount repair and it allowed the engine to move enough to break an "ear' off the frame for the box mounting... tragic how badly some car are/were repaired underneath when they made the sheet metal pretty again.

I found the electrical connector "plug" and fixed that...found another big nipple (open) near the choke on top of the carb, and plugged that...and replaced the fuel filter. No change.

Also, careful of that "big nipple"... if its inside the filtered area, it may be the fuel bowl vent. You wouldn't want that plugged.

Don't want to read through three pages of responses, so, how is the PCV? If it's bad the car will not idle. It will run well with your foot on the accelerator, but as soon as you take it off the motor will die. Have you checked/replaced the PCV?
