Carb linkage?

Does anybody have a picture of their carb set up on 68 440 or tips as to what goes where? Carter came with this 300, was in a box, junk. Put on this one, bought the linkage adpt but Im not sure where to hook things up. I dont remember how to set up the trans kick down lever. Also the pic of heat riser valve, when its running and hot it moves anywhere, after motors off about 10 mins, this us where stayed. My question, is it open or closed in this position, and in texas do I even need it?

You need the throttle linkage stud, it goes into thehole just above where you have your return spring connected. Before I do a search, did you? I know there are pictures on here from previous posts.

The carb linkage stud is available from the Edelbrock or Holley sources. OR a salvage yard!

As to the heat riser valve? Full clockwise is closed, full CCW is open. Needs the thermo spring on the backside to make it work correctly.

Ours normally hung 1/2 open. With it fully operational, I could tell no difference between it free and when it was stuck 1/2 open. If the heat crossover in the manifold is still open, it could be stabilized open. That way, the choke can still work and get exhaust heat. With an electric choke carb, judgment call time . . .

As mentioned, get yourself a throttle linkage stud. Below is a picture of one . The stud that Edelbrock sells does not fit the throttle and kick down linkage properly thus doesn’t work properly. The mopar linkage studs are very common on all lines of Mopars - cars , trucks , vans from the 1960’s into the 80’s . Any mopar that had a Carter carb will have one . They can be easily found at the wreckers .

The issue of the outer kickdown rod spring is kind of moot, to me. The earlier models used the spring attached to the rear of the rod to keep the linkage pulled forward. The later version with the rod attached to the same bracket the basic throttle linkage is attached to, at the front end of the slot of the transmission linkage rod, does the same thing, just differently. End result, the kickdown rod linkage is pulled forward to keep any adjustments accurate. Otherwise, the rod would fall rearward and cause flaky/poor shift performance compared to what it should be.

In the salvage yard search, if you might find a stud for a car with factory cruise control, that will work fine, too. Just has added length to accommodate the added cruise control throttle cable on the outer end.

For good measure, get ALL related nuts, bolts, flat washers, and clips.

I thought there was a spring on it but not there now. It may have broke. I want to make sure itwas open.
 
That does look familiar. I will start looking. When I bought this car all linkage was unhooked and hardware was removed from old carter carb, like alot of things on the car.
