Chrysler Turbine Engine Ebay

Interesting how their now including a parts car with it.

Where are they now - the cars

Funny, I had that model car as a kid, didn't care for it at the time, doh!
Pops got a courtesy ride in one at the proving grounds, he told me the story of how riders in the back seat got heat transfer from the exhaust, and when they got out of the car the rear bumper was glowing. I've never seen the 59 Turbine Special before with the center exhaust, very cool photo from the video.

Frank Mitchell, opinions vary,he no doubt was a walking Mopar encyclopedia though.
Are we maybe talking about Frank Kleptz instead? He lived in Indiana, had a reportedly fabulous car collection, and had a Turbine car that Jay Leno was reportedly trying to buy (Jay found another instead I believe).

I got to see Frank's Turbine car one day maybe 15 years ago at a small county swapmeet in Indianapolis. Saw just the roofline from several hundred feet away but immediately knew what it was (yet not believing what I was seeing). He had it there, running, allowing anyone to check it out (it wasn't roped off). It was a cool day and standing behind its exhaust was like standing behind a very large space heater.

I wished I had inspected the car a bit more. To this day when I see a Turbine car pic from back in the early 60s I wonder if it's the car I 'met' years later.

Back in the 60's lotus raced Pratt and Whitney turbines in there cars at the Indy 500. And they were four wheel drives to boot. Very impressive, so much so that they were banned eventually. Sounds much like when then the Chrysler wing cars got banned in the early seventies. No wonder I have given up on nascar. To many whiners.
Check out the vid below if you want to see one or be reminded of them.

Handicapping Chrysler and Ford was, and is, the only way G.M. was going to be competitive in Nascar. They had to pacify the Chevy boys to keep the most revenue coming in. The same reason Toyota is allowed to race, give the France family enough money and the rules will be changed to accommodate you. But I agree with you, Nascar is worthless !
