Dana 60

Unless you go with the 9 1/4 like suggested above it will have to be a custom build. Huge amount of parts for the 9", the factory 9 isn't as strong as the aftermarket built ones. The truck Dana can be built with custom ends and axles. Best of luck.

Ford 8.8s are C cliped as well and they are popular putting them in Abodys. Don't think i have the heart to do that to my car.
 
Bad ***! Two question: Are those caltrac bars I see? I hope you are running an aftermarket Axel in that beast? OK three questions are there an rubber bushings left in that car ? Or are they solid or poly? It looks pretty rigid.
I can not say I've seen a 9- 1/4 used for an application like yours, so I couldn't say yes or no. Honestly, I did not expect that whale to leave like that!! Nice

Yes, they are cal tracs. All of the bushings are stock rubber including the motor mounts and suspension bushings.

3:23 Axle ratio with a 489 third member casting, stock case with a detroit locker and green bearings.

I have the materials to build my subframe connectors, but they are not in yet.

At the risk of probably stating the obvious, have you tried Dana corporation, manufacturer of the axle? Perhaps they can supply what you require for your car?

I did a search on Dana.com for Dana 60 axle and 89 links appeared.

I was actually referring to the Axel shafts themselves. If they are stock, there's your first weak link. I've seen a -body small blocks bust Chrysler axles. The car shoots one way and the tire goes the other.

If you stay with 3.23 gears and that locker and aftermarket non necked down axles you should be fine, maybe a brace across the back of the housing. Big gears, housings bouncing around on launch, and trans brakes are what kills rear ends. At your level I would just bite the bullet and get a aftermarket Dana 60 from Moser, strange, DTS if you decide to make the switch.
 
Im pretty sure all Dana 60 rear ends are the same. Look for a Dana out of an old 1/2 ton truck, should be the same as a dana you find in a roadrunner or whatever. correct me if i'm wrong.

That is what i was thinking, just trying to figure out a year range to look for. I dont mind moving mounts around, but would rather not have to change the width.

I would love to be able to buy a complete one, but that is cost prohibitive.

I would hate to brace this one, add aftermarket axles then grenade it and still have to build a dana 60.

Plus i would like the option to be able to put the stock axle back in in the future.
 
Yea don't be like me. I put a Dana out of a B body in mine.

After rewelding new perches,putting new seals and tapered bearings, new adjuster plate, new offset wheels, I could have called Dr Diff and been money ahead, plus the time I spent doing it all.

You can get the right length, everything is new, and you have piece of mind.
My fear was that when an axle shaft snaps, it's gong to wreck a quarter panel at least, at most kill you. And we're all trying not to die.
 
The Danas from the trucks don't have the mount for the pinion snubber.

I built some reinforced motor mounts by drilling and bolting 2 flush head 3/8" grade 8 bolts thru them on the drivers side mount.
 
Truck Dana rear most likely will have floating axles and big hubs. They are a PITA to set up gear set with shims for backlash, preload, and tooth pattern tweaking. The aftermarket ones have adjusters screwed into bearing caps like 8 3/4 if you ever want to change gears or carrier. By the time it is said and done the $2000 starts to look reasonable. A E body rear will work best for your car width wise but I would be surprised if you find one for under $1500 for another 500 you have a brand new
