Decode Fender Tag please...

Thank you. I marked what it has now on your list.

h-7 = Fender Mounted Turn Signals...doesn't have this. I wish it did. I really like these.
H-1 = Power Brakes...has this.

As for f-6 here is the list, being in the f (I believe are typically fleet items, like Police)

This is the list of options that it might be (ending in 6 within the likely range)...
456 Power Steering...it has this.
496 Fast idle control....not sure, engine is modified.
516 Trunk Lamp...it has this.
536 Remote Outside Mirror...it has this.
556 Front Seat Belts...it has this.
586 Simulated Mag Wheelcovers...It might have when it was new.
626 70 Amp Battery....It might have when it was new.

Thanks again Alan..!

f/6= does the car have a rear seat speaker? Would this be in the center of the rear seat? I will check on this.
h/7 = does the car have fender mounted turn signals? Doesn't have these,I wish it did.
H/1= does the car have power brakes? Has power brakes.

Thank you!

We can eliminate some of these.

What actually was the purpose of these tags if all the codes were not listed? Seems kind of dumb that they would only list certain options on the tag and not all of them. My build sheet that was under the rear seat was so brittle that when I lifted up the seat it came out in little shards of dried up paper, almost as if your trying to pick up a piece of burned up newspaper.

The Fender Tag was used during the construction of the body and car. When the body was built, certain options required certain holes to be punched in the body or floor, whatever the case may have been. It was also used by the paint shop to know what color to paint the car, what upholstery was used, etc. I'm sure there were decode books on the line to start but once production ran for a while, all the line workers knew the codes that applied to their stations. I'm sure the line workers made errors so cars that were supposed to be equipped with certain options may be missing one or another car may have gotten an option that wasn't on the Build Sheet.

That's pretty much the general gist of the fender tag. Most of the info relates to the production of the body in white, paint or trim.

There are significant differences between plants. Each plant had a lot of autonomy as to what was coded and even when it was coded. What was coded at that plant at the beginning of the year may or may not have been coded at the end of the year. By the late 70's you see a lot more consistency between plants.

I appreciate all the info guys. Taught me a lot posting this thread. I wanted to find out what the tag had to say after it was decoded. I'm sure some of you read my post about my wife throwing away my build sheet by accident a while back. Was not a good day, but was my fault for leaving it out on the table. She thought it was garbage and I didn't notice until it was to late to fish it out of the trash. So,..any info that I can get from the fender tag is welcomed. Is there a place that can reprint the correct build sheet for my car? Thanks again for the help.

Plant 6 would be the Newark plant. Thank you.

No, there is not a place you can get a copy of the original build sheet (BS)...however, since this is a '66, Chrysler Historical may have microfiche copy of the IBM card. That was the original document from which the build sheet was based. It's not as easy to read as the BS but at least it is some documentation on the car.

Very cool thank you. Is it pretty easy to read the IBM card and understand it.
Just on their site and why is everything $25, but cars from 1946 to 1967 is $45? Still worth the money to get the info, but just wondering. I wonder if there's a blank copy of build sheets that you could fill in after receiving the IBM card??

The IBM Card is a little hard to read because it is a copy of the microfiche. I'm not sure about reproduction build sheets. I seem to recall someone on here playing around with it on their computer. You may want to use the Search function of the site and search Build Sheet. I'd be up for a reproduction as well as this is what 20 years in the Vegas sun with the top down did to mine:

I sent my order form and check to Chrysler Historical a few weeks ago and they returned the check, saying they're backlogged until mid-April due to staff shortage. I'll be resending mine then and you may want to wait a month to send your order form and money.

IBM cards can be a little intimidating at first but like anything else, they become easy to read once you learn how.

The IBM card only tells you (mostly) sales codes; it does not tell you build codes so no, you cannot re-make a BS only from the IBM card.
The sales code tells you what the car received, not which specific part went on the car. Only the BS can do that.

No sense in ordering it then in my opinion if it doesn't tell you what options it had.

It tells you the options, just not the specific application. For example, the card will tell you the car has an AM radio but because the card was used for all makes and models, it cannot tell you the exact A, B or C body AM radio used. You have to determine that specific detail in other ways.

If the card for your car is available, it is a good thing to have.

In that case I'll order it up then. You're right, it would be good to have with the car no matter. Thanks everyone for all the great information.
