One is clearly smaller and longer than the other by 1/4 of an inch or so.
Does anyone have any ideas as to why?
Is one of my rear ends different?
I'll try to get pictures of both gearboxes for further reference.

Awesome, thanks Alan. That might alleviate a few problems.Big Block/Small Block but I don't have enough data to say that definitively, that is the way it was on the three 69's I had.
They do sell a combo u-joint so you can use one with the other rear.

742 large pinion nothing wrong with that. The 1/4" in length difference is not too much of a concern but worth double checking when installed. Either will be fine behind a 383
