Exactly What Wheels & Tires Fit C Bodies?

Was talking with another c-body owner. He has 215-70R15 tires on his 1973 Polara, which are 27 inches tall.
I think they are too short because they are 27 inch tire height and c-bodies are 28 inch stock tire height.
Before I say anything, would any of the G78 or H78 OEM tires be 27 inch tire height?

traveling, so going by memory. a 215/70 could (IMO) look "squatty" and "skinny (depending on wheel width)" on a fusie/later C.

"smallest" 70 i'd do on that vintage C is a 225/70.. that tire is a little over 27" diameter i think. so in a G78/15 - probably pretty close in diameter to a 225/70 -- 27.5" maybe?

Aside: any "pre -metric" vintage (e.g., first letter alpha-numeric) tire is too old for my tastes. been EOP for decades.

any G,H, J, & L 78 works on a fusie/later C, though L's are diameter of today's light truck tires.

me? i like 27~29" diameter metrics on C's post 1968. 225 & 235/70-75's fill out wheel well and usually allow an 8-inch wide wheel with no interference issues.

page 2 of this thread shows equivalent, overall tire diameters with various wheel diameters -- many options so you can at least avoid messing with speedo if non-OE diameter is used.

LSS, G78, or H78, with 6-7 inch wide wheels, and backspacing ~4 inches (again, IMO caution with age of such a tire) could look ok. Not for me (due to age of tire), but it would be better than a 215 anything and a fusie/later C, IMHO.

hope others with access to more data can chime in.

1966 Monaco

Seller reports: "17x7 Chrome U.S. Mags Rambler wheels, running 235/45R17 tires."

No backspacing provided but looks to be around 3.5 to 4.0 inches, judging by stated wheel width and placement in wheel wells.

17x9 rear with 275/55/17. 5" backspace (0 offset)). 17x8 front with 255/55/17 4" backspace (+12mm offset). I had a little rubbing on the drivers rear because the diff is not centered. I had to trim the valuable SS wheel trim and pinch welds about 1/2"

were the fronts Special Order to get that offset? I'm considering this exact setup on my 69 Fury III Vert...

Anybody ever put stock full size hubcaps on 15x7 police rims?
How did they fit? Thanks

I have not, but they should fit fine, they are a standard 15" wheel hoop with a J (or JJ) bead profile.
Anything that would fit on a 15x6 should have no interference issues. (converse may not be true, some 70s 'heavy' wheelcovers might not fit on a 15x6?)

And I remember seeing some Dippy copcars with this full wheelcover on them. Not common, but they were out there, and I suspect they had a cop rim hidden behind.

i have owned former "detective" (for captains, chiefs, or other senior management at fleet buyers) M squads ..."real," factory rigs with uplevel trim but "all cop car" under the bling.

full (civi- car) wheel covers with 6 slot HD police rims underneath. i never restored such M ...i harvested their rusty carcasses for good, HD hard parts and brightwork).

I could not make my 1969 Fury III wheel covers fit on my cop rims ... was i doing it wrong?!? i eventually went back to some 6.5" wheels.

the 15x7 6 slot cop wheels are like a late 70's (77 or 78? to like '89) intro IIRC.

you '69 wheel covers obviously an earlier vintage and made for that vintage wheel. Which, in addition to never being that wide, in that year, the '69 wheel may have had different lip design than the later, wider factory wheels.

wheel cover mounting tangs of the earlier wheel cover would reflect that, if true. as such, might not fit the later wheel.

I personally have no experience putting 15x7 cop wheels on any application with full wheel covers. Just dog dishes.

they (15x7 Mopar cop wheels) will fit virtually any years' 5x4.5 (large) Mopar bolt pattern, and almost any car, as back spacing is a mounting-friendly 4.25 inches.

It just stands to reason to me the stamped faces of different width/years steelies would differ in shape. Perhaps even to the extent the same diameter full wheel cover wont fit the same diameter wheel from different years.

Analogously, much like 9-inch Mopar dog dishes wont fit civi/other cop steelies without "ears" ' -- regardless of year i.e., nothing to pressure fit onto around the hub area).

Somebody here on Forum knows for sure. hope they will chime in, if they catch up with this thread, with facts vs. my guesses.
