For Gary

Oh god, I'm gonna throw up.

Let's try to make cars look like rocketships that will take you to the moon. Yah, that seem's very logical.

Gary,I realize you were just born 10 minutes ago, so here it is.... Space travel and all things rocket was a big deal in the 50's-60's. Imulating the space industry was done throughout automotive design and could be seen everywhere, exhaust outlets for tail lights, gun sights as hood and fender ornaments, dashboards that would make Buck Rogers feel at home.

So why not feel like you could go to the moon in your car.....? It was the thing to do.

Now .... go get your Toyota and effeciently putter to the store.

That's called BAD design.
Yeah, I can see how the general public was caught up in all things space during those times, but for the auto designers at the time to try and incorporate their vision of an aesthetic grabbed from rocketships and space vehicles was ludicrous. It has nothing to do with good design, they only did this to exploit the public...who were caught up in a mass hysteria of beating the Russians into space, blah, blah....Oh, and fins on rocketships/space vehicles are not there for aesthetic reasons , they serve a purpose.

Stabilizers? You REALLY believe that? QUOTE]
I take it your not to famillure with aerodynamics. Yes, they really do work. just not enough to be very effective at low speeds.
I can't explain any further without a complete course on aerodynamics ..... and i'd have to charge you for that.

No, I guess I'm not familiar enough with aerodynamics to see how that is relevant with regard to a two and a half ton "forward look" car. yES, Mildred really needs 2ft tall fins on the back of her ford edsel to improve its aerodynamics and thus provide more stability as she takes that highbank towards the farmer bills supermarket. Indeed.

The industry will market anything it can make money from Wil, be it good or bad. I'm sure you know that.
Exactly .... now your getting it. :eek:ccasion14:
The main reason to be in business is to make money ....... The more you offer the public what it wants, the more money you make.
Demografics is what industry uses to determine what the public wants and does what ever is allowable go give it to them. Hense.... marketing.

It was done on a much broaded scale in those days with less government regulation.
These days the regulation imposed on the auto industry is not what the public wants.

Sales of the bland, design efficent vehicles always takes a dive and big, less effecient, vehicle sales jump when the price of gas drops.
Thats the public sending signals.

No argument there.

It doesn't appear that the "general" public has any idea just how much industry regulation impacts and is incorporated into designed objects (such as cars), they just want said object/item operate they way it is depicted to them.

Sales of the bland, design efficent vehicles always takes a dive and big, less effecient, vehicle sales jump when the price of gas drops.

Is this why the big 4dr Cadillac DeVille sedan was discontinued for a smaller platform?

Wasnt the late 50's the best time for car sales?
All that really says is that the 50's consumers of automobiles were easily had and not very savvy about design, but they certainly loved "kitch"....which is design that goes out of style....which is bad design.

You are the only one with a problem with it. Just for once cant it just be you and everyone else is ......well..... right?

Sorry, everyone has pet peeves. I just can't swallow fins on cars...and then try to justify and claimed to be good design and aerodynamic on top of that. Nope, can't let that pass.
