Front Drum Width

Can anybody help me figure out what size drum/shoe combo these drums are for? It’s off a 66 Fury III 4Dr 318 A/T with known 2 1/2 rears. Lip to lip they’re measuring about 3 1/8”. The dilemma is that the front drivers side is a separate drum, the passenger is still swaged like from the factory, and somewhere along the way they had 2 1/2” shoes put in(I’ve read multiple places they’re were no 2 1/2” fronts). Is there any way to measure the backing plate to see what size drum they’re for?

11 x 2.75 is the standard front brake drum and shoe size for your car with an 11 x 3 available with heavy duty brakes, which were also standard on some Chrysler models in 1966. You only want to measure the drum’s contact surface to determine the width.
 
Keep in mind that the Brake Shoe does not go lip - to - lip.....
The 11 " x 2 3/4 " Brake Drum has a total depth of 3 1 /8 " to 3 1/ 4 " ---- which is illustrated in your picture above......
That certainly appears to be an 11 " x 2 3 / 4 " == 11 " x 2 .75 "........

The 11 " x 3 " Brake Drum has an overall depth of just under 3 1 / 2 "......

Keep in mind that I have *** N.O.S. *** U.S.A. made *** Front Brake Drums ***
And *** N.O.S, *** Asbestos *** Brake Shoes for all of the above.....

Brake widths are measured on the SHOES, not the drums. The drums will need to be widere than the shoes.

You can look in the Factory Service Manual (free download at www.mymopar.com ) to see what is supposed to be on the car, as to brake shoe widths. They all had 11" drums and shoes. The backing plates match the shoe width.

^^^^ But he already said that someone threw 11 " x 2 1/2 " shoes in there , because the prior owner was just retarded , made a mistake , or couldn't find 11 " x 2 3/4 " Brake Shoes ^^^^

I seemed to get a "vibe" that the owner needed to see what the factory specs were. Just for information purposes, no more, no less. Which is why I mentioned the free download of the FSM at www.mymopar.com. Perhaps with that downloaded FSM, he might also find other things he might have a question on. The more information sources which agree with each other, the better chance of finding "the truth", by observation.

For what it's worth - some pics. First, this is a rear 2" drum:

Here's the 2" drum with a brake shoe resting in it:

The width of the friction-face of the 2" drum is 2 3/8 inches. The friction surface extends 3/8 beyond the shoe.

Here's a new front drum, for 2 3/4 inch shoes:

Surface width is 3 1/8 inches. Subtract 2 3/4 and you get 3/8 inches. So the width of the friction-face should be (or will be) 3/8" wider than the shoe. For a 2.5" shoe, the drum should be 2 7/8 inch wide.

BTW, I wouldn't have thought that the rear shoes for a '66 Fury with 318 would have been 2.5 inches. My '67 Monaco 2-dr with 318 has 2" rear shoes. I thought the standard size for the 65-67 C-bodies was 2 inches (not including wagons or 440 cars or cars with A/C, etc). Basically if they came with 2.75 front shoes then they came with 2 inch rear shoes. Or maybe that's totally wrong. And then they went to 2.5 inch rear (minimum) in '69.

And --- not even....
There are 11 " x 2 " Rear Brake Shoes and Drums from 1969 - 1972 also --- for the Light Duty systems --- predominantly in Dodge Monacos and Polaras and
Plymouth Fury s and VIP s ----
Chryslers --- Newports , New Yorkers and 300 s almost Always received the 11 " x 2 1/2 " Rears......North of 99 % .....

And where did most of the 11 " x 2 " Rears go ???
North of the border , EH ??? Because the Canadians wanted cheaper cars , that is what they got !!!!

I'm glad I have 2" rears. The ratio of 2.75 to 2 means that the front / rear ratio is 58:42, which is probably closer to the front/back weight ratio, so less likely to lock up the rears.
