Do to the obscure nature of our cars. There is a lack of aftermarket replacement fuel tanks. Has anyone found a creative solution? I know lucky Costa installed an aftermarket mustang tank in his 67 wagon. Has anyone else done anything similar? Thanks

Any good fab shop should be able to make you one. It may not look like a stamped factory one but it will serve it purpose

What vehicle are you seeking a tank for? It might well be that a tank is available, just not from the big box auto supply chains.

Even for the C-body cars, there are a few B-body tanks that will fit the non-wagons, just with 18 gallons capacity rather than approx 24 gallons capacity. Saving money in the process.

One issue with "fabbed" tanks is getting them "pickled" so the metal does not rust. As some friends discovered in getting an extra tank built for their cab-over camper pickup truck in the 1970s.

I have a 67 chrysler wagon. I've looked at Van's and other parts houses. There is a replacement tank for the sedan, but not a wagon. I've looked at the mustang tank option a couple of times. I've installed mustang tanks in a few trucks. The biggest drawback to the mustang tank is that I lose the footwell for the 3rd row. That may be my solution, and a future owner deal with the read seating area.

Thanks for the additional information.

Wagons have always been problematic as to fuel tank issues. Due to where their tanks are placed. If the rear seat was not there, it would still be an underfloor area for storage and such. Their lower production rates and later attrition rates also play into their potential replacement market for fuel tanks, unfortunately.

The one good thing is that all C-body wagons, within a platform model year range, all should interchange. 65-68, 69 and up, for example. Unfortunately, still not a lot of wagons compared to sedans/hardtops. Especially in the expanses of land west of the I-35 corridor.

Still, there are some larger vintage vehicle salvage yards still around. I don't recall any C/Slab wagons at Browne's in Sunset when we were up there last spring. Also a larger yard between Graham and Breckenridge (closer to Graham), plus the larger yards in the Lubbock and Amarillo areas. Some larger yards in OK that do older cars, too. Browne's is apparently in a nationwide circuit of larger older vehicle salvage yards.

I'm suspecting your tank is not repairable?

Just some thoughts,

i have used 66 B body tanks. but it was on a wagon with only the spaire tire not a 3rd row. the shape of the tank fit around it like it was ment to be there.

Perhaps swapping the traditional spare tire for a modern compact (thinner) spare tire of a similar diameter might work even better?
