Gas tank float

My gas gauge in my '57 Plymouth stopped reading correctly about two years ago. I took everything apart and the float is waterlogged (actually gaslogged would be more like it). It came with a cork for the float. I bought a few from Ace Hardware that are the same size. The original one seems to be coated, I guess to keep it from getting saturated with gas. Does anyone know what I can use to coat the new cork or is it not necessary? Thanks for any help.

Chances are whatever they used back then has since been outlawed. Generally what works best isn't environmentally safe. Try finding carb soak that doesn't take three days, if it can be found at all.

You could go with a brass float from Napa and modify it a little? Or a similar size carburetor float?

In another forum, a guy mentioned that he got an ultrasonic cleaner at HF, dumped some motorcycle carb parts into a Pinesol solution. They came out very clean, he said. Also said he told his wife he bought it to clean her jewelry with.

Our last issue of DeSoto Adventures actually just had a two-page article on this, written by Murray Park's daughter, Christina. They were able to find a suitable replacement float and sell them on their website: Murray B. Park - Used and NOS Parts for Chrysler, Imperial, Dodge, Desoto, and Plymouth
