There were no exhaust manifold gaskets on a big block from factory. If both surfaces are free from pits I put permatex aviation high tack or Indian head on both and tighten it down. If they are pitted and in not primo condition then I would use the metal reinforced gaskets, fel-pro not those crappy white ones, metal toward the head side. This is the same ones and orientation I use on headers BTW.
