I'm starting to think I'm going to live with the drum brakes. Back in my 20s I had a '65 Newport with a single pot master cylinder and booster. I drove that car for probably 7 years without issue. At least my Newyorker has a double pot cylinder with a booster. I may look into a new set of shoes from Mobileparts.
I have learned to live with the drum brakes on my '67 New Yorker, as I REALLY wanted to keep the 14" wheels and "turbine" wheel covers (see attached) . For the flatland suburban highway/in-town cruising I d they're fine. Yes they grab, but you get used to it. I won't be doing any mountain climbing with it, but don't have much occasion to do that anyway. It pays to get original style (Bendix, OEM) brake shoes, MUCH better than the newer (often Chinese made) ones out there, smoother/better stopping. Good luck.
