Heavy Metal

The Enterprise was not an retrofit. It was intended to be a nuke from day 1.
During its construction it was deemed too expensive to build the other five of its class so they shelved the design and built the Kennedy as a conventionally powered ship. The Kennedy was ordered as a nuke but was changed to an oiler after the keel was laid. Meanwhile they went back to the drawing board and designed the Nimitz class.

i thought keel was laid in the 40's but I was 20 years to early. so why was it "overpowered"? accident or by design? thanks.

You are thinking of the previous Enterprise. Hull 65 wasnt even approved by Congress until 54.
Why was it overpowered? It had eight reactors and could overdrive the props at wfo.
Its just an empty hull sitting in storage now.

This doesnt belong here, but rather than start another one, or messup somebody elses for an idle question, i just put it here.

Out and about today and saw this: What happened here?

No apparent accident, car is intact on all sides except what wheel did to fender, but obviousy a suspension/driveline part failed.

anybody seen this with these cars? i have relatives who own them .. thats why im askin' as dealers had NO info for me.

quick one. saw this a couple weeks ago. Dunno my caddies that well, but this is a "baby fin" model, so '60-'61-ish?

I dont have a good sun angle for this pic but it was a pretty car, about 100 coats of paint on it, immaculate bright work,a little rumble as i saw the guy parking it .. but do you know what really struck me?

See if got it as well .. gave me a smile. :)

That's easy. The crane operator "nudged" his vehicle as a reminder you don't ever park in a steel mill.

I see two things. First, that looks like a wheel chair in the back, but the other thing that struck me is the tires are up against the curb. That's gonna kill those wide whites.

wide whites

Back in the day these were known as "flop-a-long's". Many weren't actual white walls they were white rubber donuts that fitted under the bead. If they were rubbed against a curb they would slide and produce ripples that flopped as the wheel rotated. These only worked with tube tires since they caused air leaks on tubeless. I was glad to see them go.

Do I see I child seat in the back ?

though its hard to see in the photo, up close as i stood next to it, it appeared to be a car seat. for the upper age/still under sized range (i dunno what it is in MI) child I would think.

My thought was cool old car (apparently with rear seat belts), in the hands of a younger person with kids, outfitted so the family could enjoy the cruising.

My kids didnt "cruise" until the oldest was 4 and her sister 2. Wife with 2 year old on her lap, oldest up front riding between us. We went for ice cream that day.

I was 31 yrs old .. and the car? My Dad's '68 Eldo (yes, I still have it) :)

he was about two inches away .. it took him literally 3-4 minutes to park. even got out once, checked and tried again.

i was admiring the finish while all that was going on.
