Deepest US Navy wreck was located last month

The destroyer USS Samuel B. Roberts (the "Sammy B.") was discovered in about 22,600 feet (4+ miles) of water off the Philippines. Sunk by Japanese battleship Yamato during WWII in October 1944 in the Battle off Samar. 89 of 224 men were lost.

story: U.S. Navy ship that took on Japanese fleet in WWII becomes the deepest wreck ever discovered

"The remains of a U.S. Navy destroyer escort that sank in a World War II battle against Japan have been found in what is believed to be the deepest wreck ever discovered.

The wreck of the USS Samuel B. Roberts, also known as the Sammy B, was found in two pieces on a slope off the Philippines last week at a depth of more than 22,600 feet, according to a statement by the American explorer Victor Vescovo and the British company EYOS Expeditions. That's more than four miles deep.

Despite being outgunned, the Sammy B attacked a fleet of imperial Japanese navy ships led by the Yamato, the largest battleship ever constructed, before sinking under fire in the Philippine Sea, earning it a description as “the destroyer escort that fought like a battleship.” Among its 224 crew members, 89 were killed.

“It was an extraordinary honor to locate this incredibly famous ship, and by doing so, have the chance to retell her story of heroism and duty to those who may not know of the ship and her crew’s sacrifice,” said Vescovo..."

Think I caught up with a weekend "tractor" warrior near Ashtabula OH (I90 eastbound, exit 223) pulling into the Pilot rest stop.

Couple of smaller class tractors, on a "not for hire" trailer, that look like "pullers (wheel size, chrome VC's, rollcage, tall stack headers, ballast weights on the front, etc., )" when they are not plowin?

Could not get my phone ready to get better shots as he drove by me and disappeared behind the box truck but I am certain what he may have been up to. :)

Wanna try something for fun. A mini survey.

Seven years ago one of our UK members tossed out something for the group to identify their favorite WWII fighters (1939 to 1945).

The best

For those of us willing to express a preference, I will put the five fighters from the above thread in successive posts below.

Please indicate your preference for JUST ONE plane by a green check (agree). No need to "like" or "thanks" or "disagree" .. your green "agree" check is your "vote" for that plane.

Lets watch it for couple weeks and see if a clear "winner" (most check marks) emerges. One vote only for one plane only, per member, again please

If you know your planes, this should be easy. If you wanna learn about/refresh your knowledge about your planes, plenty out there to read about them before you vote.

Don't like any of the five as your favorite WWII airplane? Just pass on the vote and then if you want post the ONE WWII rig you like best.

The candidates (no particular order).

1. Supermarine Spitfire (Britain)
2. Mitsubishi Zero (Japan)
3. North American P-51 Mustang (USA)
4. Messerschmitt bf 109 (Germany)
5. Messerschmitt me 262 (Germany)

Thanks for you participation in advance.

I cannot "vote" on my own posts.

First choice, P-51 Mustang -- the only machine I want but will never be able to own. Close second, the me 262.

Purely technical basis -- nothing to do with nationalities/combatants.:)

You could own either.

There were 7, I believe ME-262s built in the USA and sold:

folks if you are just catching up with this thread, please take a look back at post #1,766 to see what we are trying to do -- improvise a survey of our favorite WWII planes.

Appreciate your input in any event

Of the five planes mentioned (why no FW190 or P47??), I would choose the ME262. First production Jet Fighter and it just looked badass!

But, when speaking of badass, nothing beats the biggest piston engine fighter ever; the P61 Black Widow! Whoo!!

Thanks for your input.

The "Black Widow" IS a bad-a**.:)

As I noted, I just started with the five fighters from the seven-yr-old thread. Also noted, of course, that if people wanted to "vote" for other WWII planes (fighters or not) they should feel free to do so.

Practically speaking, there were hundreds of different aircraft used in WWII (fighters light/heavy, bombers (light/medium/heavy), fuelers, seaplanes, etc). Just limited it to five to try to do a poor man's survey on a "manageable" basis.

Let's add a few to the formal survey of fighters. "Walk-on" preferences are still invited .. but again we can "survey" hundreds of planes. End of this week we'll see what people think ranked by these nine/any walk-on planes

The candidates (no particular order).

1. Supermarine Spitfire (Britain)
2. Mitsubishi Zero (Japan)
3. North American P-51 Mustang (USA)
4. Messerschmitt bf 109 (Germany)
5. Messerschmitt me 262 (Germany)
6. Vought F4U Corsair (USA, see post #1,778)
7. Focke-Wulf 190 (Germany)
8. Republic P-47 Tuhunderbolt (USA)
9. Northrup P-61 Black Widow (USA)
10. Lockheed P-38 Lightning (USA, see post #1,807)
