HMS Thane: On January 15 at 13:28, near the Clyde floating lighthouse, an underwater explosion struck the stern of the ship with devastating consequences for the "Taine." The aircraft carrier lost speed as its control system was rendered inoperative.

While the propeller and engine remained intact, the explosion severed the connection between the turbine and the propeller. A large hole was torn into the starboard side of the stern. The incident resulted in the deaths of 10 crew members, with an additional 25 injured.

An investigation of the damage revealed that the holes were not caused by mines, but by T-5 acoustic torpedoes. This confirmed that both attacks had been carried out by a German submarine

Philadelphia was the last stop for Tennessee and California. They were placed in reserve in 1946 and struck from the Navy list and scrapped in 1959. Sister ships, they were both at Pearl Harbor and both were hit. California sustained more damage because she was moored alone. Tennessee was inboard of West Virginia suffered only bomb hits. Both were repaired enough to make them seaworthy and sent to the Navy yard at Bremerton with West Virginia following soon after. After an extensive rebuild only the main gun turrets remained the same topside. Tennessee and California were the last to be armed with 14 inch guns while West Virginia (Colorado class) was a near sister and differed with twin 16” turrets in place of the triple 14” turrets. Otherwise the three emerged nearly identical. Tennessee returned to the battle line first, followed by California, and then Wesr Virginia. The three ships, along with Pennsylvania, Maryland, and Mississippi, participated in the battle of Surigao Strait, the last battleship to battleship action and because they were equipped with the latest radar, fired the most shots and scored the most hits. The rebuild included massive torpedo bulges amidships that allowed room for the eight twin 5” mounts, however the beam expanded to 110’ and they would no longer be able to pass through the Panama Canal.

Reiss Steamship's William A. Reiss (2) receives a deeper hull at Manitowoc Shipbuilding over the winter of 1962-63. Press photo of unknown origin/MHSD collection.

The hull was deepened 7.5 feet (from 32' to 39'6") by cutting it in half horizontally (forward of the engine room), jacking up the upper portion and fitting in new hull plates and stiffeners. Doing so increased the carrying capacity (weight of cargo carried) by 28% and the volume of the holds by 37%. The vessel was sold for scrap in 1994.

Bucyrus 1570W "Walking" (i.e., able to move under its own power) Dragline Mr. Heman II. Jasper (a bit west of Birmingham) AL, Here somewhere in the 1980's

THe Drummond Coal Company used it to work the Arkedephia mines.

Strip mining went out of favor (and/or Arkedelphi played out), making this machines (He Man II was a small-mid sized piece of equipment, but STILL it was huge.). 75 ton bucket in one scoop ("Big Muskie", biggest ever, had a 325 ton bucket by comparison)

Rather than dismantle it, they decomissioned it in place and it still sits there today

Apparently it got to be a "movie star" too in a Transformers movie.
