. Well, he decided to leave the air cleaner off while he was experimenting to save time. Coupled with ignition problems and gas spillage when removing the fuel bowls and making a mess with the gas. He went out for another test run and didn't come back for a long time. We heard sirens and jumped in my Challenger as we were sure the fire trucks were heading towards him. We thought he might of had an accident. Nope, the engine backfired and caught on fire. Melted the 6 pack hood, destroyed the carbs and toasted wiring. Costly mistake with being sloppy with the gas and not running with the air cleaner. His car sat for 6 months before he got enough money and parts to run again. All of us learned important lessons that day.

Not only are they air cleaners but first and foremost they are spark arresters.

I dont know how that car never went up in smoke. I had many fires in the carbs and under dash wires fry........

A bland 4 door sedan is exactly the type of C-bodies my father (an accountant naturally!) always bought.
I wish I had the brains back then to sneak a six pack in when he wasn't looking.

Future mod for a 2 tone C-Body in the works?

Yeah, Pattison Ave is down there. Its sketchy now, but there was a white castle burger joint north of where we were when I got nailed.....and I never paid those tickets either...living in NJ and all. I'm sure the fine and prosperous city of Philadelphia had larger fish to fry.

In the JFK parking lot, Pattison and Front streets are legendary..........people woudnt and couldnt comprehend what went on there, in public, on public roads.

What was cool about front st was the diversity of cars. I used to see everything from 70' Datsun 280z's to Pro street cars with tubbed rears and wheelie bars....blatant street racing down there. I think a couple dopes got killed down there and that led to the city cracking down on the "activities". After that Atco raceway started picking up because they have "run what ya brung" on Friday nights. Always a large Mopar contingent there...I loved walking through the staging lanes chatting with all the Chryler people.....and it's an ABSOLUTE blast to race on a sanctioned track with a Christmas tree and time lights against someone else in the lane next to you.

I like the untamed excitement of street racing better......

It was amazing to see what they had there. There were car trailers in the parking lots......... I have seen cars on fire, people get run over and many accidents there. It sounds insane, because it was but it was still Very fun.

They'd open up the hydrants and chase everyone away. We would then fill the McDonalds and Burger King parking lots or head over to South street.

The good'ol days
