How big a wheel/tire can you get on the back?

Hey All:

If I took the fender skirts off of a '66 Fury, how wide a rear wheel and tire can I squeeze in there?

Thanks,

Steve

15 X 7 wheel with standard offset and a P235/60, 225/70, or 215/75 tire.

These are 255/70/15s on 8" wide wheels. '67 NewYorker Apr-May 2006 (11).jpg'67 NewYorker Apr-May 2006 (12).jpg

No clearance issues here, 1/2" to 3/4" are the close spots, but I can't speak for the Fury.

I suggest removing one wheel and do some measuring off of a straight edge placed accross the bolt surface of the drum, both inward for the back space against the leaf spring and outward toward the top of the wheel well.

Also, the weight should be on the axle, with the car level side to side.

Thanks for the pic. Do you think you'd have more room if you pulled off the fender skirts?

I have 245's on my 65 Sport Fury standard off set no rub issues, I have heard that you can go 265 but it gets pretty tight

I have 245-55-18's on 18x7 American Racing wheels on my 66 Fury. No clearance issues whatsoever in the back, even with 500lbs of parts in the trun on the way to the nats. On the front, I had no clearance issues once I removed the inner-to-outer fender bolt that is at the very top of the opening.

I wanted 17's on the car, but they were clearing out this style wheel, and the 245-55-18 is the standard new camaro tire, so they are pretty cheap (under $100 each for BFG's), so I jumped on it. Looks great! Big *** car like a Fury looks funny with 14's or 15's. 18's are the max though, any bigger and you'd be ghetto

18's are border ghetto depending on the application. A problem with 245 - 55's is the sidewall is too thin and you sacrafice the ride.

I agree, 18's are the max I would use on C-Bodies, but the choices for a taller profile on 18" tires are very limited.

seriously? a c-body already floats like a cruise ship. it will never even be noticed.

not many people taking a 5000lb c-cruiser through autocross races....

Thank you for helping my point. To add to that larger wheels usually look ridiculous on c bodies and most old cars. Hell, they look large on my 2010Challanger but that is what it came with.

no one has said they look too big yet (except my father, but he thinks the 15s on his Galaxie look good)

Original post by noosacuda "Ihave 275/60x15 on 8" rims on my '66 300"
Same here. 4.5" backspacing on mine causes the tire to rub the lip on turns and such. 5 or 5.5" backspacing is perfect

I have a '66 300 also. I think I am alright in the back. The wheels I was looking at only come in a 4.5" backspacing in the 15x8 wheel. The 15x7 is a 4.25. If I was going to make this wheel work on my car, am I correct that I would need 15x7 on the front for turning range and 15x8 with 4.25" backspacing would be alright on the back?

I couldnt say for certain but I believe you are correct, the 15x8's are too wide for the front. The original wheel was probably a 5 1/2" rim. Besides a 8" wheel on the front would look too wide.

Then let me be the first, your wheels are too big for that car. The Fury looks great otherwise.

I am certain your Dad has a good head on his shoulders and has made an accurate assessment of his Galaxie. What year Galaxie by the way?
