Is it appropriate for a worktruck that you don't want looking like an eyesore at your house? Yes.
Low-buck way to keep rust away until the $$ arrive for a better paint job? Yes.
Would I paint a show vehicle using this method? No.
I used to use oil base enamel to paint the exterior of the Hornet. I can tell you that the areas facing the sun got dull within 4 years. That paint is now relegated to only the interior where it holds up well. The exterior must be a 2 part water based acrylic which can hold it's semi-gloss sheen for about 10 years in the salt air environment.
