I can't get the filler neck into the gas tank.

I had my tank reconditioned and I thought I would install the tank today, because I finished a job early near my shop. I had no luck. I will admit I did have a gasket going from the neck to the tank backwards nearly the whole time I was trying to install it.

I wasted so much time I wanted to see what the best way to do this. Should the tank already be mounted in place or just raised and mount it after the neck is installed? Any tips would be greatly appreciated. Am I crazy or did I read that someone put a difficult rubber gasket in the microwave to warm it up?

When I removed the neck it was really tight and I said to myself at the time, this is going to be a pain to reinstall, I definitely had that right.

I just recently installed a new rubber filler seal in my 69 tank. I soaked it with WD40 and worked it in with a push and twist motion. Worked OK.

Any other ideas, I tried for 2 hours today. What a nightmare. My problem is if I put the gasket in the tank that won't work, it will only press the gasket into the tank. If I put it on the filler neck it just presses it up the neck. I thought I had the solution by putting a hose clamp on the gasket to keep it from moving. I just can't get it to go into the tank. I have left the tank detached during the process thinking that would make it easy should I just go ahead and install it and try my luck that way? I'm at my wits end.

I've always put the seal into the tank with the tank out of the car, then fit the filler tube into the seal once the tank was reinstalled. Never had much trouble but it is a tight fit. Are you sure you have the correct seal.... Is it OEM or a reproduction...?

It is a reproduction I'm about to look for a OEM seal. I looks just like the original unfortunately I can't find the original seal to make a direct comparison.

Boy I wish I had saved my old filler neck gasket because I just wasted 6 hours over 2 day trying to install the wrong gasket. :eek:ops: I just check my order and it was my fault it was for a '66 Dart.:violent1:

Thanks bluefury361 for suggesting that I might have the wrong gasket.

Never throw away before replacement; I even keep them afterwards very often if it was the original part that came from the factory for some sentimental reason, like the first set of spark plugs I had in a very low mileage car.
 
No I have not. I replaced the springs on all my cars, was I supposed to save 8 leaf springs? Cant keep it all

I'm usually very good about not throwing away parts until they are replaced. I have done it twice on this car. It would have been obvious with this part if I looked at them side by side.
 
That's alright, you got all your bad luck used up on the stupid filler. Now everything else will go smooth.
