The door locks on my ‘65 Imperial don’t work when I try to lock the car from the outside. The key seems to have trouble actually going into the locks. I can’t seem to find a specific set for a ‘65 Imperial. My question is would a c body ignition and door lock set work? Or does it have to be imperial only? And would ‘64 or ‘66 door locks work?

Why do the keys seem to not want to enter the cylinders? I presume you have shot some penetrating oil into the cylinder slots to loosen up the tumblers in the cylinders? What about the deck lid cylinder?

Is there a letter stamped near the head of the key, on the flat shank area?

Just curious,

I actually didn’t do anything to the locks because the car came to me this way. The trunk lock cylinder works fine as well as the ignition cylinder. The only ones that I am having trouble with are the door lock cylinders.

If you’ve never been able to make the key work in the doors and adding some lube didn’t help you might take the whole set to a locksmith so the door tumblers can be made to work again with the ignition key. It’s possible that the door tumblers are worn out which seems unlikely especially the passenger side or the key is worn out to the point that it somehow still works in the ignition. Or the previous owner replaced the ignition switch with one that came with a key and then didn’t provide you with the original key.
If you decide you just want to replace everything I have a whole set removed from a low mileage ‘66 Imperial available for sale.

I would think that the cars ignition cylinder has been changed in the past. I have had quite a few cars pass though with an ignition key and a door key. My wagon is one of them.

Before you do anything, you want to lube the lock. It sounds like you have some tumblers sticking.

Don't use penetrating oil as that tends to gum things up, depending on what you are using. (never use WD-40 for example).

This is the stuff to use. Squirt some in the lock and start inserting and removing the key. Once it starts getting easier, then start wiggling the key back and forth, never forcing it.

This can will last forever.

Agreed, graphite is well suited for lock tumblers.
