I'm bracing for flogging and the flame... Dumb questions...

Rider and ah few others rent car haul trailers to you know. Check the cost of a 1 way rental as opposed to a 24 hour rental. Might surprise you. Whats your objection to using your 3500 Ram? Can't be the rain. You've got the best of the best there and if you don't trust your pilot, with the short bed it's even less stable as mentioned.. ???????????????????????? You drive your 3500 problem solved, right?

AH HA, Now we know, I thought it 3500 was yours. Best advice I can give you is don't try to haul a 4400# car with your 'Stang, or a possible worn out borrowed trailer. I don't know if your new toy is North, West , or South of you but you might be looking at a professional car hauler to bring it to you. With that I'll strongly suggest you deal directly with a company weather it's 1 or 2 guys out there chasing BUT DO NOT DEAL WITH A BROKER(MIDDLE MAN) GL with your chase, Jer

Yeah, the guy with the 3500 is a good friend at work, but he's in the process of moving from a house into a 5th wheel Toy Hauler to move to Alaska. The car is 250 miles Northwest of me, and I just got confirmation that we have a nice full size flatbed trailer with ramps to tow the car, and my Dad is the pilot who will be carrying my precious cargo with his Ram 1500.... in the rain. :/

it's my only option, since I'm not spending $1,000 to have it transported, and I'm not waiting any later than this weekend to pick it up. It's my dang birthday, and I've been chasing an enjoyable classic cruiser for almost 25 years now. It's definitely time to make a move.

Quick digress- I was looking through the classifieds (to see how comparable of a 'deal' I'm getting for the current market, because I really wanted to get this car for $4,200) and keep seeing "HOSE" in comments. What is that all about?

Guy who owns the 3500 is tied up. I drive a 2015 Mustang GT.
We gotta change that! :poke:

The Ram 1500 will do fine for towing. You can tow the Chrysler with any trailer, Ryder, Uhaul or whomever, and gently accelerate when it starts to wag. A four hour trip will be over before you even know it.

Have a closer look at the pictures. You will see it.

A hose laying on the ground near the car, after they washed it for the pictures in the ad, usually found on Craigslist ads.

As for the price, you know you don't have to offer the full amount right away? :poke:I like to politely ask if they'd take $X,XXX, and go from there. Even at $5k, it looks to be a fair deal.

LOL, if you hang around long enough, you realize that there is a hose visible in almost every CL ad. It became a running FCBO joke and indicative of the quality/credibility of the car/seller.

If this Ram could cross the Rockies with a Monaco in the trailer, you should have no problems for that short distance with an open trailer.

Hose is just an in joke, as just about every photo or advertisement has a garden hose in it, people just started saying "hose" and it became a standard comment.

Happy birthday for the weekend, hope the car doesn't require too much work as they "all" require something.

Don't be concerned by some of our grumpier appearing members, they've seen lots of folks come intending to do wonders, say "my car won't start" and who then proceeded (despite wise advice to the contrary) to buy everything from an ignition switch to coil, battery and distributor- still won't start and either discover a faulty wire - just repaired the wire and she runs!!!! Or else they give up and sell in disgust.

The wise, experienced folks will help those willing to listen to and follow their advice and suggestions. Be one of these, and enjoy many happy smiles and miles in your lovely car.

Worst case you are out the value of the trailer to U-haul. Liability is extended from the tow vehicle, and as long as you are within the GVW of the trailer all should be good to go.

My F-150 that is going to pull a '74 New Yorker accidentally becomes an F-250 Super Duty pulling a 61 Valiant on paper.
Ooops. Close enuff...

Well, kids, guess what? If you were to rent that U-Haul Auto Transporter, and you wreck and damage or total the trailer, YOU are on the hook for $8,000 to replace that trailer. And no, you can't keep what's left of it. This is assuming you lied about what you towed it with and/or had on the transporter. If you took out insurance from U-Haul, it will be invalidated, due to fraud on your part by lying about the use. You can't lie about what you're pulling it with, because U-Haul is required by their internal rules that a U-Haul employee physically hooks that trailer to your tow vehicle. If you say you're hauling a small car, you get a small transporter. If it's a larger car, a larger transporter (they have two sizes plus three sizes of dollies). Again, if you wreck and you lie, you are very, very screwed. And rightly so. You will also be placed on their banned list, so you'll never be able to rent any truck or trailer from them ever again. How do I know this? My son manages a large U-Haul store in OKC.

I have to laugh when people try to figure out ways to "get one over" on the rental companies.

The 300 frontend looks SOOOO much better than the charger on the magnums.

I would have to disagree, while pondering this I came across page where a guy with a magnum found a guy on Craigslist with a matching vanilla white 300. They did the swap in seven hours and I thought the 300 looked better with the magnum front end.

Hey Graham, I've been meaning to text you. I recently joined the magnum club. My friend who owned it for ten years was moving away and made me an offer I couldn't refuse. I only drove it the day I bought it and that was enough to convince me these are great cars. Gonna push the "old" grand prix through the winter and pull out the magnum in the spring.

The oldest hose picture I could find was from Ma Mopar herself. Enjoy your new old car !!!

Oh noes. Not the UHaul banned list. Anything but that. Good lawd whatever would we do if we got on the UHaul banned list. My I don't believe I could sleep with myself. The shame of it all.

And never get the insurance, it's a sucker bet. Just like extended warranties.

We're going to be hauling in the rain, and the 3500 is now out of the equation, so it's gonna be a regular cab, short bed Ram 1500 5.7 towing with a dual axle steel trailer. If that trailer falls through (like everything else in my plans) then I'll chance it with UHaul... but the guy driving the truck has a questionable driving history. Makes me nervous.

Sounds like driving it home may be worth considering. It looks like it will make it no problem and the seller is confident it will (yeah, we've heard that before). As long as the tires are good you should be good, sure, alot of things car go wrong, while driving anything. I'm not proud to say this but I've driven worse home.

Hey Grant that is a great looking Magnum! Let me know if you need anything for her. I have essentially rebuilt mine from the ground up now lol. 300000kms and still going strong!

Sounds like you found a trailer for this time. However it doesn’t hurt to check out a local trailer sales place. They sometimes rent. My local place rents an enclosed trailer for $70 per day and an open car trailer for less than $50. Maybe not quite uhaul prices, but the trailers are the right size.

So how does that work when they never physically looked at the car and signed off on the papers? They didn't do their part, just saying.
