Long drive today

Should say this drive wasn't by myself. My 9 year old son wanted to go along after he heard me tell Mommy that I was going to take a long drive. She wouldn't be able to go since she had work with in 2 hours. Told my son to hit the bathroom as I wasn't stopping. He gets into the back seat with Mom's older cell phone that no longer makes phone calls and starts to play Minecraft. Before half way he asks me if we are going to stop for lunch. I tell him we just finished that large breakfast of waffles and eggs that we have every Sunday at 10:00 am. Neither of us need lunch at 1:30 so no we keep going. On the return half he fell asleep.

Well it was nice I got a long ride last weekend because just now the car refuses to start. Have voltage to both sides of the coil but no spark out the coil wire.

You probably have bad points. One side of the coil should always goes to ground to create the spark. Check the points first, use a multi-meter to check resistance. It sounds like either the points are not opening and closing or they have excessive resistance. Points should be set to .016 clearance.

If you have electronic ignition, probably the pickup unit has failed. You can check the coil for a shorted condition regardless of whether or not you have electronic ignition by disconnecting the distributor side of the coil. Then turn on the ignition, use an alligator clip from the negative side of the coil to a good ground. The coil should create a spark each time you touch the disconnected negative side to ground.
