Our team has been conducting acute research on coach builders that supplied production bodies to Chrysler, Plymouth, DeSoto and Dodge Brothers prior to the 1950's. Over the pact 20 years we have taken the time to inspect and document as many vehicles produced by Briggs Manufacturing and other manufacturers as possible. Briggs Manufacturing in Detroit has always been of keen interest because many of our family members worked for them and we have a great deal of information that they have collected. The Briggs Manufacturing Co. made automotive bodies for the major automotive companies. One of their plant was located at Meldrum and Mack Ave in Detroit and was part of Chrysler burned to the ground in 1963.

Body Tag Information:
The first set of characters is for the series and body style.
The second set is the is the serial number for that body.

If you have any body tags, build cards or other historical information that you are willing to share please let us know. The information that we are assembling will be added to our Body of Knowledge Reference Manual and we will acknowledge your contribution during the next printing some time in 2020.

Junk yard find. 1974 Police Cruiser. While most police departments bought their cruisers from the PK package that was offered with a wide variety of options, not all of them did. Most police units were in the L or low priced range, the M class were usually Fury III units. This gem is in a junk yard in N Carolina. You may see it on a future episode of Junk Yard Gold.....MAYBE we will see. The second tag, vehicle image and engine were sent to us from a vehicle that is or was in Alabama.

Yup, I even managed to comment on it. Apart from F15 and F39 those are familiar sales codes to me.

F15 is an alternator, but what output? In 1974 it always comes together with H51 Air Conditioning - Manual Controls. Probably the answer is hidden in the fine print of the 1974 Police Car brochure.

The problem is that sources contain conflicting information in this case:

F15
= Alternator 65-amp [Scott Ross: "1970 Plymouth Road Runner", Forest Lake, MN: Cartech, 2018, p. 90]
= 75 Amp Alt [Paul A. Herd: "Charger, Road Runner and Super Bee Restoration Guide", St.Paul, MN: Motorbooks International, 1994, p. 316]

The 1974 Plymouth Taxi brochure mentions standard 65 amp (Chrysler) and optionally 85 amp (Leece-Neville).

A decision between the alternatives depends on the alternator that is advised for the Air Conditioning option, as described in the 1974 Plymouth Police Car brochure.
