New Toy - 1968 Plymouth Fury III

Yes, keep the tag - it shows its lineage and as said, shows it to be the survivor it is. And as you found, removing it opens the can of worms dealing with patching/painting/matching which IMO ruins the beautiful untouched look it has now. I'm no expert, but that car is one of the best unrestored examples I've seen.

Our '68 4 dr was that color, and yours is the first I've seen in a while with the big, padded horn emblem. The one piece I kept when ours went to the scrapper in '75.

Congrats and enjoy!

Thanks guys...Great advice and well taken. I'll leave the emblem on the trunk lid as you're all right, attempting to patch holes and match/blend paint might just be a nightmare I'll regret. Isn't it something...I use to work at a dealership in 1977-1978 doing body work, painting, and doll ups. One of the last things I had to do before delivery, (and I disliked it back then too) was to put the dealer emblems on the trunk lids. I really struggled with drilling two holes into the brand new car's trunk lid. I remember to this day that many customers strictly gave us orders not to put them on their cars or they wouldn't take delivery.

Now as far as those hose clamps that have been updated...I too would like to see the originals in this engine bay. Could you all give me some advice? I know I have a bunch of original type clamps in my junk drawer...the thin little squeeze type that go flying if you don't grab them with the pliers properly. Not sure if I have enough but....at any rate, wouldn't you all agree I'll have to get all new hoses before I attempt to install them? I'm thinking the clamps that are on the hoses now once removed will have mashed down the rubber and the thin little round originals will not work well...or look well either. Agree? So all new rubber hoses under the hood is in order...Correct?

That style clamp you have on there now is better than the factory. Such a trivial item wouldn't even be on my To-do list.
Yah, my motto is that new hoses and belts are a no brainer. Every car, every time.

What a find. Such a beautiful car. That is the color combo my dad's 68 Fury III sedan was. It is like looking at a time capsule. I have owned mine since 1982 and have restored it to factory original condition. Yours is dead on accurate. IMO leave the dealer badge on. You have the deluxe steering wheel and rear speaker option, very nice. You have yourself one very fine 68 Fury III, enjoy.

Crap, brings tears looking at that gem. I bought a 68 convertible virtually identical other than the roof and engine. Had a lot of good times with that car and probably would still have it if the engine hadn't been a 318. In fact solely because of engine size, I traded it in on my 70 Fury.
Enjoy!

You guys are very funny. I enjoy the camaraderie here. Thanks for all your kind comments too.

It was 70 degrees here yesterday. I had taken the car out for a short run the day before and all seemed fine. After checking all the fluids, I decided we'd take the car for ~30 mile round trip drive to visit my wife's mom in the nursing home for Easter Sunday. On the way down, all seemed fine except for a vibration in the steering wheel at 35-45 mph. Thought to myself "wheels up front must need balancing" no big deal. After our visit we set out to return home. Right after after releasing e-brake in parking lot I knew something was wrong...car did not roll well. I backed up slammed on the brakes...moved around a little in the lot...and the car rolled a little better. I decided to set out for home...taking the country roads where I could stop and feel the backside of drums a few times. I did so and they were warm but not hot. As I got about 1/2 way home I got a whiff of hot brake shoes and it seemed like I was having to give it a lot of gas to get the car going. I stopped and checked the drums again...all 4 were hot but certainly not untouchable. I tried to move car and it wouldn't budge so I had my wife call AAA to get it home. The guy did a nice job of "scooping up" the front end so he didn't have to drag it far and actually, I didn't see any one wheel drag as he pulled the car up onto the flatbed. He used straps to winch the car up and also to secure it, so all in all I was pleased. We hopped in cab and he drove us home. When we got home, I drove the car in the garage and it seemed to roll well. Hmmm. I'll have to dig into it this week. Perhaps the e-brake cables are hung up? Maybe all 4 brakes are adjusted too tight? So our first real trip in the car didn't go too well but still we were thankful for AAA, getting home safely and without any damage to the car.

Bummer.... I had a rig act somewhat like that a few years ago, (well, close to 40 yrs now), that turned out to be a lack of lube in the rear end. Wheels/axles felt fine but you couldn't get your hand near the rear gear without heavy gloves. Of course we were halfway into a 2000 mile trip and moving at the time. Let it cool and filled it with lube - that rear was still in there when I sold the pickup about 5 years ago.

No kidding...you have me thinking now. I pulled all 4 wheels today and didn't really find anything wrong with the brakes...All 4 drums came off rather easily. I did notice the rear hubs are very hard to turn though with trans in neutral. Is it possible that's whats going on with my Fury?

The rear axle may be dry of fluid, I would day it worth the effort to pull the hogshead and check it all out to be sure.
