I bought a stripper 69 Newport for parts.
Pretty bleak fender tag. The only option i see on it is deluxe AM Radio.

Wouldn’t it have been available with a slant 6?

Does seem meager though.
Chrysler, being the top of the line came standard with 383 snd never a slant 6. But the power steeringcwas optional. Ditto the 727. Base was 3 on da tree lol!

So yeah I guess the D32 Torqueflite was an option. The R13 Deluxe AM jammer. That's all I see on the fender tag. The Power Steering may be standard because of something else. I thought the wing window was an option, but maybe that's only on 2 door models. I'm pretty sure the interior code is the E1Q, and then there is the 3 paint codes of Q4. Not sure why that is listed 3 times.

Pretty basic but also a very early one off the assembly line.

Honestly looks nice & complete enough to be made a driver. Q4 is a great color plus no vinyl roof.

The only options on my ‘71 are a/c and the passenger side mirror. Seems odd to me to have an expensive option (back then) like a/c and not pop for power brakes. I’m thinking the original owner didn’t order it that way. Probably bought it off the lot instead.

Only MAJOR things are listed on the data plate. Not everything, as the build sheet does.

According to the Library at www.hamtramck-historical.com, power steering was only standard on NY and T&C models, optional elsewhere.

I highly suspect the particular vehicle was ordered for an elderly owner. An owner who did not want power brakes (as they were "touchy" for some buyers), yet wanted power steering for the ease of driving and parallel parking a 4000+lb vehicle. AND wanted the security the Chrysler brand provided them with. Have to understand those varied buyer demographics from back then.

The 1969 Newport I owned back in the day was the last car I had with front drum brakes. And yes they were extremely touchy.

Q4 paint code three times for:
Body color
Roof color
Interior door frame color

What goes on the fender tag is options that need different holes or brackets welded to the body before paint.

Then always engine, trans, paint and interior codes,

3 times because of body paint, upper door paint and roof.
Sedans got wing vents regardless.
2 dr hardtops with AC they were deleted.
Not sure if AC cars you could order them.

69 fender tags introduced a newer format vs 68 and older tags.
In general, they were sparse as the majority of info could be found on the broadcast sheet.
Unless you score a loaded Imperial or Charger RT/SE. Lol!
Windsor built cars fender tags are notouriously vague for example.

Would be interesting to see the build sheet. Its a very early car and might be something cool/special. Pilot cars didn't have a lot on their fender tags.

Jefferson plant did not code a lot of items to begin with. That tag would be typical for that make and model and how it is equipped.

Not all options, regardless of 'major' or 'minor', are coded on a tag especially at a a plant like Jefferson. Jefferson plant tag coding protocols were different than other plants. What was coded at Belvedere, Windsor or Newark differed from Jefferson.

Options that require a hole punched (antenna, tachometer, moldings), a bracket (console/buddy seat, cruise), or BIW panel modification (radiator support, cowel, dash), driveline, paint and trim are, typically, coded on a tag. Suspension, wheels, steering related items, some power related items are, typically, NOT coded. Exceptions and variations exist depending on the year, plant and coding protocols of each plant but that's usually the basics.

There is no way to know how 'well' or 'stripper' of a car you are looking at simply via the fender tag. There are numerous and hundreds of dollars of options that are not coded on a fender tag.

Based on evidence from other plants, pilot cars of that era typically carry July SPDs a low VINs (<100). Promo cars carry an 801 SPD and, usually, an out of the ordinary VON.

So while this is certainly a low VIN and 'early' car there is nothing particularly telling from the VIN or VON number that this car is anything other than either an early sales bank car or ordered car.

Here's a standard 383-2bbl manual transmission (Just like Cbarge said above) Newport ordered without a radio. NOTHING coded other than drivetrain, paint and trim.

LOL indeed! It’s hard for me to imagine buyers, by the late 1960s, wanting a 3-on-the tree and no power steering on a Chrysler. I wonder how many left the factory that way.

Has anyone EVER scene a 3spd manual fuselage Newport? I know it was standard in '71, but I've been asking for years and have never met anyone who's ever seen one. I've seen Polaras, and tons of Furys, but never a Newport.

Great information. You all are awesome !
I will have to look for a broadcast sheet when I get it home in a couple months. It's paid for, i just need to wait for winter to pass. The main reason & bought it was for the dash pad, cluster, non A/C defrost ductwork, window regulator parts and guides and some metal repair panels. I will be posting it for parts. I hate to take it apart because that's one more gone, but it will help many.
