Not Charging

When the regulator loses ground the charging system goes to 16 volts, not to zero charge. So ground is not the problem for no charge.

Removing the paint is not necessary. How many millions of new cars are built and they never remove any paint from under these gadgets. They work fine, and make it out of the factory, off the sales lot, past warranty and 50+ years without a problem.

The bolts need to be tight. They ground through the bolt threads and under the bolt head to the unit being grounded.

With that mechanical regulator, it's true that it will "overcharge" if the regulator isn't grounded, but rumor has is that the second field connection on the square back alternator (one must have snuck into his garage too) has been grounded through the yellow wire. There's no doubt that connection looks to be a bad ground. Obviously, that would cause a "no charge" condition.

I think you'll agree that before any other problems can be found, basics like this have to be corrected even if they aren't the final problem.

Regarding the bolts, if you look at original voltage regulator mounting bolts, the washers have little teeth that bite into the VR mount and cut through the paint. That is why it's not a problem with millions of new cars, but could be a problem with one old car that has lost those bolts... Or the bolts are loose etc.

You can see the teeth on the washers of these replacement bolts.

These horn bolts show the teeth a little better.

E bay is much cheaper and there are different pilot sizes. Usually around 25.
