Last fall I was attempting to back my little utility trailer up my driveway and park it close to the fence for winter storage. The trailer is a bear at best because the wheels are too close to the hitch so any steering error and you're toast. Well the bucket seats in the Jeep too high to see over, my pot is too large to turn sideways in the seat so my only option is to twist my head around at an angle to see out the rear. However, in that position I end up looking through the lower part of my multifocal glasses. I could see the back seat great, the trailer not so much.
So up the driveway, down the driveway without any joy, I can't seem to zero in on the fence, I'm either way too far out or I hitting the freaking thing. My wife is guiding me, I'm getting pissed, my wife is chuckling. In an effort to see better, I close my left eye and rely on my right eye. Better, but for some reason I still can't see very well.
This went on for about 30 min and I was starting to draw an audience complete with self appointed flagmen and a cheering section. I was about ready to leave the Jeep and trailer where they sat for the winter and go see Graham for something that could self park a trailer.
At this point my neighbour across the street, a retired RCMP inspector, asks if he can help. Be my guest! He did the back and forth a few times and got the trailer parked perfectly. The flagmen dispersed, my cheering section went home and I went in for a shot of good rye.
Month later I had my eyes checked. My left eye which I had kept closed had good vision. My trailer parking right eye was a disaster, a cataract which reduced my vision by 70%, macular degeneration which scrambled the 30% I could see. My macular was of the dry type for which there is no treatment. Great! So I book for cataract surgery. During the testing and crap associated with that, they discover my macular has converted to wet, for which there is treatment. So June, the cateract is gone and every 4-5 weeks since Feb I get an injection in the eyeball to fight the macular.
It's now nearly a year after my trailer parking fiasco, should I try moving the trailer? Maybe I should just sell the damn thing!
Getting old sucks, I want a refund!!
