My hometown, alleged to be c. 1960, Quincy Street at Ninth, Topeka KS.

I have no memory of this particular location, though the popcorn stand on the corner hold vague memories of my youth. Why?

Because of many field trips (a short, five minute school bus ride) in elementary school to the state Capitol Building.

Amazing in 60 years, nothing but a parking lot has popped up (city population is barely above, now, what it was when I was a pre-teen 100 years ago :poke:)

I like what location used to be (though too small for me as a "house", a "hobby garage" candidate, ~ 2,500 sq. ft. building, right off I-70, etc., nonetheless).

Anyway, by 1970 we were gone, and I still wasn't of driving age yet, so I don't have good memories of most city locations. Dunno when it was razed either.

Still curious what was there now.

Today, a parking lot, though the building in background (red circle) is still there.

Today, still a thriving, multi-franchise organization, though I cannot find the address for this location.

Possible building is still "somewhere" in Winston-Salem, looking now more like a bland, GM "brand box'" as opposed to an 80 year old , well preserved architectural gem I hope it is.

my "worst" fears... the modern car biz execs probably cleaned up on that real estate deal. with that old art deco gem, plus all the asphalt parking, it seems to have gotten a lucrative alternative land-use in housing.

yeah, i hate to see great old WWII-era architecture come down but chasing these kinda buildings for 25 years, in urban settings, has shown me razing/rebuilding is economically irresistible (e.g., prices my amateur, private goals out of the market) many times.
