Well after alot of work finally got the newport running and back to normal, my question is I put one of the pertronix dist kits in, gapped it properly to .30. The car starts right up the only thing is when i put it into gear it wants to stall. We messed with the idle still did it. The idle also goes up and down, maybe the kit is no good or I need to mess with the mixture screws, any help would be appreciated, motor is a chrysler 383, did a cam upgrade, lifters, springs, 650 cfm carb. Stock distributor in good condition.

Did you have it running well before you did the pertronix "upgrade". If not swap back in the points and get it running that way first. Then you can eliminate the pertronix as the culprit for the stalling and surging.

Sounds to me like it might be a carb issue though. Personally I have had issue with the pertronix systems and would never run anything but factory Mopar electronic ignition systems.

Sounds like the carb to me as well, what kind of carb? I run the pertronix in 2 of my cars and am very happy with them.

650 edelbrock could it be that it is getting choked out by the air cleaner, i know a guy that had that problem just thought of it now, as far as carb issues is the cfm too low or do I have to mess with the mixture.

650 is good for a 383. As far as getting choked out by your air cleaner? That's unlikely but take it off and see what happens. Take note of where your mixture screws are before you twist them all the way in, barely snug. Out a turn and a half is a good place to start. Is your vacuum advance plugged in to the correct port? 2 small ports on the front of the carb, the one on the left is a little higher and is correct, the other is manifold vacuum.

I have the vac advance in the higher side on the left. My father in law said yesterday as soon as he pulled the choke all the way the car was going to shut off so maybe thats a sign of not having a vacuum leak.

I don't have any experience with the pertronix on a 383, but have seen a lot of installs on MG's. All of them required the timing to be advanced significantly in order to run properly.

you never said how many degrees of ign timing you have and you have it set BTDC right

it is around 14 btdc. turned it clock wise. When we figured out the overheating problem was from the timing being off we used the timing light with vacuum advance off and it was a little passed the 10 btdc on the timing cover. I put the points back in today and gapped it to .17 for the points. I sent back the other pertronix kit because the plate was not right and the module was too close to the magnet you could put the .30 spacer between it but it was so tight in there plus it would move back a hair towards the magnet sleeve so I sent if back for a replacement but I ordered the ignitor 2 instead being I have the flamethrower 2.
