I have only had my Scat Pack for a month and I have had about 5 close calls with speeding violations. I haven't been pulled over....yet. It is so easy thinking I'm going 55-60 mph and I'll look down and I'm going 80 plus mph. There are alot of 2 lane roads here in Maryland where there are cops with radar hiding in cubby holes, cemetery's (yes cemetery's), and other places and they will ticket you for 8 mpg over the limit. I was driving today behind an asshat driving 36 mph in a 45 mph zone. There was 2 State Trooper cars and they were standing in their cubby hole pointing their radar at me. They were staring me down as I coasted by. I don't know if they were admiring my car or thinking there is somebody we are going to be on the lookout for.

My cousin drives all over the country with his flooring business and gets tickets often. He bought one of these Escort 360 radar detector and hasn't had another ticket since. He said it works with laser radar guns too. I know we have some people that are truck drivers here or drive cross country a lot.

Your thoughts???

Maximum protection has been achieved by the guys who run both an Escort AND a Valentine.
So I've read dozens of times over the years...
 
I used to use a Valentine. I really liked it, but the "instant on" radar the cops use around here made it not as useful. I've slowed down, and the rest of the world has sped up, so I'm fine.

The one thing I didn't like about the Valentine was that updates could be pricey. The last update would have cost me almost as much as a new one.
 
The last time I used a radar detector, was with my Firebird; and it was anot original Escort. Currently when I drive my Challenger with the 5.7, on the xways. I think I'm keeping up with traffic or just passing, the speedo has shown 90ish. You just don't get a sense of speed, the road feed back is missing.

Why are you constantly speeding to the point you need a radar detector?
Why can't you just obey the law?
What are you doing that's so important that you can't pay attention to what your speed is?
I sure as hell hope your not fiddle fartin around on the phone?
I think your a idiot that only cares about themselves and don't care if others insurance rates go up because of your ignorance and inability to obey the speed laws. Causing issues and putting other drivers in danger with your speeding.
You need to throw that POS away, slow the f%^k down and start going the speed limit!

Bob, if you have NAV on you radio, there is a setting that lets you pick an amount over the speed limit and it will notify you when you exceed it by that amount.

If you look down and your doing 80, then your putting everyone around you at risk. Stubs can be a little rough around the edges, but you asked for thoughts and he gave you his. You then cussed him and called him an idiot. i have to go with Stubs on this one. When i see a person doing 80, he is the idiot in my opinion. Go ahead, rant on me.
 
Radar detectors.are technically illegal in commercial motor vehicle. Once the double nickel has been repealed except for the asshat states that thought/think that split speed limits are a good idea, none of which I run so no worries. On the weekends I don't go anywhere if I can help it.
A#1 speed protection and traffic delay warning device is still a CB radio. I run alot of regular routes with the same truck drivers, some I would not know outside of their truck, but still a constant feedback.
You have to protect yourself especially being a marked man with a stealthy black Dodge Charger. I know a bright orange '68 one attracts eyes, is it because of orange, 1968, infamous shape, I do not know, but if they hear 5k rpms and tire squeal, they are not looking at the Prius going by.
There is a place for 80, and a places to not go 80. If this is a problem for you to understand I ask you please sell all of your vehicles immediately you are a incredible hazard on the road at any time. Yes that is a professional opinion.

Tell me, if they'll nail you for going 8 over. Why can't you be like me and keep it under 5 over? Just a thought.

Bob I have the Escort 360 and there is good and bad. It has saved me several times from mobile radar but as @300rag said instant on or lazer will not be caught in time. With Lazer the Trooper basically has to hit the detector for it to pick it up. The high end car guys have lazer jamming radar defeat systems hard wired into their car. These can run $1500-$7500 if you can believe it. The escort has a smartphone app that will warn you of upcoming traps or speed/red light camera locations which is the reason I went with it.
 
5 over for me... and I've been drive sports cars for a long long time! Most of the enjoyment for me comes from drive the back roads with lots of twisties! Using the throttle to help maintain cornering and adhesion.
To me it's more fun to drive the racing line thru corners than flat out speed. Not to mention worrying about losing your license. Most states will pull your license if your doing 20 or 25 over nowadays.

Enjoy the handling of that great car you have... not just the sheer power.
 
Speeding doesn't kill, carelessness does. Nothing reckless or careless about speeding .
Going above the posted speed limit is only to tell the public when they will be extorted .
If there were no speedometers in cars everyone would drive to their comfort zone. Probably much higher than the limit.

Run it out Bob. I hate my truck being governed at 107. It was there for 10 miles this morning .
I've had the Challenger to 140 three times. I'm fine!
 
I think I’ve blown by a stubs300 type every run up to the cottage. Me and everyone else on I-75. There’s always one in the left or middle lane rolling at the posted speed limit as the entire state of Michigan is going by him at 85+.
 
I don’t think anyone here is advocating high speed endangerment of the public. The European freeways all move at considerably higher speeds than ours. I travel 15-25kph over if the traffic is light on our version of the Interstate. The problem is not the speed I’m going most of the time it’s the idiots who don’t understand a zipper merge or drive 10 under in the left lane. I honestly believe you need to post speed limits for each lane before some of these morons get it. In any event drive how you drive Bob and let her rip when it’s safe to do so!
 
Well, it doesn't take a hot rod Dodge to run faster than the posted speeds, easily! My company truck is a Texas Edition Sierra 5.3L 4-dr 1500. When we got the 2016s, I found that I'd be on the Interstate, behind a perceived slower car, then nudge the pedal for a "few mph more", only to find that the other car was doing the speed limit and it just looked slower. So it was something to get used to!

Also, in the DIC of the GM pickups is a speed warning alert, which can be set to whatever speed is desired. I have no doubt that something of that nature is hidden in the FCA electronics too.

Two things probably need to happen. One is to lose the attitude which owning a Scat Pack is probably putting in your head. People know it's fast as it's got a Hemi in it, plus the spoilers and wheels, etc. Learn to profile and cruise rather then to seem to desire to prove it's superiority and power.

Second thing is to learn how to use the steering wheel controls for the CRUISE CONTROL. Not only will it save the tickets but also on fuel, too. Provided you set it at the posted speeds and use the buttons to vary the speed up and down.

Back about 1980, CAR AND DRIVER did a radar range test of a group of vehicles. Quite interesting, in the time before LIDAR! And they had a then-new Escort radar detector in each one, to see what the "cushion" was between when the alarm went off and when the radar got a speed reading.

KEY THING is that when the radar pulses ONCE, then the speed reading happens on the radar. Which is why you have to hit the brakes hard immediately when the alarm goes off. In that earlier test, there was a certain decel rate that kept the radar from getting a reading that it would lock onto. More modern electronics have probably negated that possibility?

ANY radar-type unit is only as good as its calibration, which should be done with a tuning fork rather than an internal check. Get one of the books on "beating tickets" for more information on that.

So, end result, it might be nerve-racking to always have one foot on the brake pedal for when the detector goes off. No real enjoyment in that, to me! Learn the feel of the car AND set the DIC to indicate road speed so it's always right in front of you at all times. Also learn the tach readings for cruising speeds, too, as a secondary indicator of "too fast".

For when you want to play . . . in an appropriate venue . . . find the Performance Pages and see what all's there! The cars are awesome in so many respects, other than assisting the local municipalities in their annual budgets. Nobody said you had to drive like there was an egg between your foot and the accel pedal, but getting up to posted speeds can be fun. Then punch the cruise and enjoy the ride.

With time, you'll discover (as I did on the company vehicles) how much throttle you do NOT need in order to get to speed briskly and feel the first three trans shifts/hear what engine sounds are being made. It's all about getting to know the equipment more than anything else.
