So on my 66 Fury III I'm having an issue with a rear end noise that has me baffled. When the car is going down the road it doesn't hum or anything like a wheel bearing issue but, when I slow down like in a parking lot it clanks and chatters. If I burp the throttle it will stop and then clank when I let off. I can drive it slow like that hold the brake and give it gas and it will stop. It seems to do it worse when I turn the car. It also really only does it after it gets warm. It seems to make the noise when the drive train looses tension.
I have new U Joints and they have no play in them so there's no failure there.
The brake shoes and adjusters are all still attached so nothing there.
There's no vertical play in the axles. The right one which is the adjustable one has maybe 1/8" or less of horizontal play.
The differential has fluid.
Today I jacked the car up and put it in jack stands, started it and put it in drive. What I noticed is the right wheel is putting the power down, the left wheel is not moving but rather it lurches forward and stops. I can hold the left wheel from turning and I can feel and hear noise coming from the differential through the wheel.
Is this normal behavior for one of the rear ends on these cars?
