So on my 66 Fury III I'm having an issue with a rear end noise that has me baffled. When the car is going down the road it doesn't hum or anything like a wheel bearing issue but, when I slow down like in a parking lot it clanks and chatters. If I burp the throttle it will stop and then clank when I let off. I can drive it slow like that hold the brake and give it gas and it will stop. It seems to do it worse when I turn the car. It also really only does it after it gets warm. It seems to make the noise when the drive train looses tension.

I have new U Joints and they have no play in them so there's no failure there.
The brake shoes and adjusters are all still attached so nothing there.
There's no vertical play in the axles. The right one which is the adjustable one has maybe 1/8" or less of horizontal play.
The differential has fluid.

Today I jacked the car up and put it in jack stands, started it and put it in drive. What I noticed is the right wheel is putting the power down, the left wheel is not moving but rather it lurches forward and stops. I can hold the left wheel from turning and I can feel and hear noise coming from the differential through the wheel.

Is this normal behavior for one of the rear ends on these cars?

Not sure about the noise but you have an open differential. With the car in park jack it up and turn one wheel the other should spin in the opposite direction. Or power brake it should just spin one wheel. The passenger wheel is usually the one that will spin.

Sounds like a problem with the spider gears in the differential, need to tear down and ck them

Red I figured thats what it was supposed to do but it the right wheel spins pretty fast in just idle and the left on just sits there and grabs or lurches and stops and repeats the same.

Sporty you think its the adjustment between the pinion gear and the spider gear?

Your cross pin is probably walking in the carrier housing and that is most likely cracked. This is from burn outs, burning the tire letting it run out till it hooks, neutral drops, stuck in ice and snow on to dry ground. All of which Will will tell you is senseless but the rest of us know is great fun LOL, you can cheap out on this repair by pulling rear and putting pin back where it belongs then welding the pin into carrier both sides if you get the pin back where it belongs it will perform flawlessly, I have done this numerous times, carrier and pin are both junk anyway so you have nothing to lose.

Not the ring and pinion, the spider gears are in the carrier they ride against the side gears and spin on the cross pin Dave is talking about. You need to remove the center section to ck either of these things. good luck

Well, I haven't done any burn outs in the car since I have had it. That 318 is lucky to just move it more less do burn out. It did this after a long trip.
So when you say carrier house what do you mean? The actual gear housing or a part of the internal housing where the gear rides?

8 3/4 diff right?, if so remove the axles, driveshaft, unbolt the center section and remove from the housing. the carrier has the ring gear bolted to it and the side gears and spider gears are inside. the spiders ride on the cross pin. you will have a better understanding when it is sitting in front of you. do you have a factory service manual? it should have some good views of this. If its not a 8 3/4 just remove the rear cover and you will see the carrier and you can ck the spiders and cross pin
