Remember when?

Cigarette vending machines went the way of the Dodo around here back in the late 70's.

Bought my 1st pack the summer of '47 in Baraboo,Wi. Dropped a quarter in, turned my back to the machine so i could see if I waz being watched. Reached behind me and grabbed a knob and pulled. My pack of Realighs fell out of the machine with 4 penny's tapped to the side to cover the over payment of the quarter, lol...HIGH TEC STUFF

My pack of Realighs

...almost everyone smoked, everywhere you looked! Even my doctor. In first grade at school we made glazed ceramic ashtrays as Christmas presents for our parents. Smoking was something you would never think of objecting to.

Church was about the only place people didn't smoked, although it wasn't a rule so a few still puffed away. Used to see a lot of men smoking pipes. I can remember going to the Saturday matinee movie and if you sat up in the balcony sometimes it was hard to see the screen through the smoke. When I went to university, smoking in classes was very common. When you got on an airplane, every passenger got a complementary package of 5 smokes, usually Export A or Players. Before they even got the doors closed everyone was puffing away and the plane became a smoke filled tube. Looking back it really was disgusting.

When I first started working for a living, I remember a bunch of my bosses smoked Camel and Lucky Strikes with no filters. Tough guys... Their offices would be dingy with an always full ashtray. They all died in their sixties too.

Bah... I know someone that just turned 81 and still smokes, the SOB is still way taller than me. Like my dad I've lost over 3" in the past 5 years. (5'11" now).

I shave with a Gillette Super adjustable double edge razor. I have a few others, but this is my favorite.

1957 though, not 1962 as said in the title.

Replaced today with the little ones screaming for sugary products in 2/3's of the aisles... the meat cutter who has watched "Waiting" one too many times and resents special requests... and followed up with smashed glass on the Family Truckster in the parking lot and handcuffs for leaving the puppy in the car. After "saving" the dog, local animal control later euthanizes the pup due to over population...

Progress...

This vertical-style machine (and the squat, square box kind where bottles were horizontal) -- and the skin i left behind sometimes trying pull the bottle out by its cap. Then using the bottle opener on the machine .. made me feel all grown up next to my Dad :-)
