Remember when?

Civil defense drills in school.

We used to go into the basement of the school and squat next to the wall. Terrifying stuff for a little kid. Syracuse was on the "hit list" for a nuclear attack too.

In hindsight, it wasn't so we would survive an attack.... All it did was make sure that the bodies were buried in the basement of the rubble.

The "Sister Bertrill" lapels to which I was referring ... :-)

sorry Sally, you're one of my fav 70's chicks .. but i might need to explain my period jokes in #140 and #143 to a younger audience :-)

mens platform shoes. mid-1970's -- non believers just watch Saturday Night Fever.

As ridiculous as I looked in them looking back at the incriminating photo evidence -- the prom, disco night, etc. -(and heck im already 6' 4'' too, i felt like I was wearin' frickin stilts), i DID have my wide, condor wing lapels to aid me in gliding to the floor after I tripped and fell on ANY stairwell :)

How Disco! I was watching a old 1970's Don Kirshners Rock Concert on YouTube and the lead singer had big 'Bell Bottoms' over a pair of these boots and I thought "I had a pair of those boots". It was the hippie period when I graduated from engineer boots, and yes I did wear Bell Bottoms! (all us Rock Stars did)

1970s Frye Boots

Don't remember them being that tall the pair(s) I wore were about engineer boot height.

I still have my Frye boots .. they've come in an outta style since I bought them circa 1980-81(?) .. the sole is a little thick but the boot still has cool look.

you're right -- my boots where not as tall as these and they completed my "Urban Cowboy" fashion phase abou that same time (c'mon .. i know it wasnt just me :) )

go back just three years and ya got the look parodied in this National commercial and what I was definitely wearing my senior year in high school, big leg pants and all.

we were in Topeka Kansas .. we MAY have been a target as I think we had silos within 100 miles of us. I dont remember any missle drills after the fifth grade,

I also dont ever recall being scared for the bomb shelter stuff (which I never percieved nukes as threatening -- way too far over my head).

OTOH, it was the tornado warnings (not the drills) .. that sh*t was all too terrifying and real. Even to a second grader as we learned the summer of 1966 (subject for another thread).

That you boss? If so, sweet! Any event, not super-wide but fashionable depending on the year.

I cannot put mine up .. way too embarassing. My prom tux was like this .., about this color blue, nearly shoulder to shoulder wide lapels, huge bell bottoms, chest and sleeve ruffles to an outrageous degree .. and platform shoes:-)

Trying to recall the year, but it's not coming to me. I would have to figure out when that wedding was.

I was too young for this phase by a few years. My uncle, after he bought his GTX upon his return from Vietnam in 1968, had a couple. Even a polaroid floatin' around the family albums of him wearing one in that car.

My Dad would NOT buy one.. though some of his buddies (in 68 my Dad was 35 yrs old, my uncle was 20) had 'em. Like most fads, gone in a couple years.

In the early 70's imitation buckskin polyester suede sports jackets were the rage. They felt like a very high quality buck skin, but were actually polyester made from recycled plastic pop jugs. I bought one in about 1975 and paid over $500. I see you can still buy them, only now they are under $50. Another of the so called "high-teck" fads.

that was exactly ( I think) like the Tux I wore to Prom. got there in my 69 Road Runner and I am sure there was a Lot of Disco music being played. If it hadn't been for all the Beer I would have more memory's of that night. except the Tux, I had forgotten that mostly.

....shag carpet not just on the floor but going up the walls and up the sides of platform beds and built-in seating.

....Con-Tact Paper on anything and everything. Cover your refrigerator in a woven-cane design, or mushrooms, flowers, wood-grain, metallic butterflies, etc.
