Remember when?

Suede Converse "All Stars" .. circa 1973(?), the "Air Jordans" of their era (minus urban kids shootin' each other over them). Mine were green. I laced them just like this too ...

A lot of folks don't know just how bad the polio epidemic was. They even closed public pools because of it. Young people were very scared.

My sister caught it in 1955 at the age of 19, just before the vaccine came into use. She was lucky as it really only affected her legs. The rest of the family tested OK except for me... I tested positive for being exposed to it, but I never got sick. She worked through it, and lead a pretty normal life, except for a very slight limp when she was tired. It came roaring back in her later years, known as post-polio syndrome. It weakened her greatly and leaving the details out, it lead to her death.

The Salk vaccine was a real wonder drug.

About 1952 my Dad gave me Meccano set and it blew my mind all the things you could build with bits of steel and lots of nuts and bolts. That first set helped me to realize a life long interest in building things and using tools and my hands.

The next life defining moment came when my dad showed me how to build a crystal radio using the same methods as the troops used during WWII to listen to the BBC. This sparked my interest in electronics and electricity.

Between the radio plans and the meccano set parts, I built many radio's using meccano structures to hold the coils, detectors and air gap tuning capacitors pirated from old radios. The beauty of the crystal radio was it didn't require any power and it worked best a night hidden under the bed covers. It would pickup stations from all over the world when atmospheric conditions were right and skip was bouncing everywhere. Twenty five years later I was still at it with a CB radio listening to skip. Those were great days. True we have world internet coverage and tools like google and FCBO to communicate even easier, but it's nothing like the thrill of building a crystal set and tuning in the BBC or a station in Australia!
