Chrysler beat you to it, about 1980. On my '80 Newport 360 2bbl, they went to a Denso axial compressor. Cools great. ONLY thing is that a new intake manifold is needed as the rear mount of the compressor needs the thermostat housing to rotate its mounting studs. Look at the Edelbrock Performer intake for the 318/360 engines. It has the dual-pattern flange for that reason. The rear-most inner bolt is where the Denso rear mount is. Housing looks to be the same, just clocked differently. Other intakes that do not have that dual-pattern flange only work on '79 and back factory a/c cars.
This way, you can keep everything production-based and possibly save some money . . . other than the rear mount issue.
