Saw the ad. Thought of Gary.

Fins say late 50's like no other styling cue. Chrysler's only sin was hanging on to the style long after it had ceased to be popular. We have gone to the other extreme today where styling trends are dictated by the wind tunnel.

The wrong turn in my opinion was the design theme after the fins. The Speed boat cowl design combined with resizing the Dodge/Plymouth cars while the design was mostly nailed down to complement the longer wheelbase cars originally intended.
After all Cadillac was no.1 luxury car seller from late 40s until "forever" Holding on to fins till the late 70s and even beyond IIRC.

Yup. And for good reason. I believe there once was a time when people had to wait in long lines for gas?

Yup.

The big caddy STILL had vestiges of fins way up into the 90's

This 59 Buick wouldn't have been if Exner had not created the Forward Look. I'm grateful. That was the General diriction before GM Designers saw the 57 Chrysler models.

...and then if by some miracle the caddy guys did an almost 180 turn in my eyes....kind of "fuselage" looking...

.....still, just a slight hint of the past....the LED stop lights. Nicely executed semantics IMO. I can live with that.2000 Cad 03.jpg
