Saw the ad. Thought of Gary.

Yeah I don't know either, I saw one with my son in the car mentioned how I liked it and then they started catching my eye. I would still have to walk the Lincoln dealer lot on a Sunday to figure out which one I have in mind. My son BTW does not care for.them. I just like the grill and tail treatment, car might be a p.o.s. for all I know.

I like this version much better

I can't disagree. There's a few nice ones for sale around me and I have a nagging devil on my shoulder yakking in my ear non-stop saying, I deserve one.....

Everyone has their own likes and dislikes. I did think that some designers had gone too far with their tailfins.

To me, these were tastefully done.

I'm not sure if these could be called fins but, I like them.

Virgil Exner was pure genius when it came to car design. The true test of car design is in how well the value of those designs have held up over the years. Even 50 years later, the forward look cars (so named because they looked to be in motion even though they were standing still) have held up and continue to increase in value because they are outstanding and creative genius. Visit Sweden during the major car show (30,000 collector cars) and see where they all are going now. Forward Look cars are still sought after with a passion. The real sin of car design is being bland and boring, just like the other guys' stuff. Even with wind tunnels dictating a lot of design today, BMW manages to put out some creative, very appealing designs, such as the 5 and 6 series sedans and coupes, and even the Mercedes CLS models from a few years ago (much more than the current one) strike a chord of greatness.

Sorry guys! :)

Some weren't necessarily too much but, just didn't look right.

Agreed. The last car (black) is a perfect example of industrial strenght "kitsch" (art, objects, or design considered to be in poor taste because of excessive garishness or sentimentality, but sometimes appreciated in an ironic or knowing way). Sadly this seems to be atypical of the period.

When talking about the high water mark of 50s fin designs you'll see in some instances that the base line models, at least in hindsight, looked way better than the ultimate tinsel Versions with two or three tone and multiple taillights, some base cars even looked good while the luxury models looked bad. In case of the 59 Mercury I agree that especially the Parklane top model is overloaded. On the other Hand I find the Commuter Station wagon among the most attractive wagons of this model year.

Seriously, every maker jumped right on the "sedan coupe" design. Gorgeous when the CLS was intro'd but all the copycats have ground the concept into the dirt. KIA? The KIA and the Merc look the same now along with Hyundai, Fusion, et Al.

That car has no personality IMO. Bland, jelly bean styling like many cars today. They imitate each other with small variations. It is harder to design today then in the past before the whole OPEC thing.
