Went out for a drive today in my 71. For the first time since I have owned the car, I tried out the shoulder belt. This left me wondering...since alot of our cars have either a shoulder belt or a lap belt...which one is legally correct by today's standard? Or what do you guys prefer? I personally like the lap belt...

I prefer none ...
I agree. And usually I dont in this one. Got pulled over in the Durango because I wasn't wearing one and he saw it driving behind me. Made me wonder about the lap belt scenario. You can't see that officer...

In most states, you are required to use which ever belts the vehicle was equipped with, if it has both shoulder and lap belts, you theoretically required to use both. Some states make a historic vehicle exemption for vehicles that did not have belts to start with.

The Monaco has the seat belt option and i use them. Just always been a habit since i was 16.

When they get behind me I usually slip the belt under my arm and click it . As long as it is clicked ....

Well, you should always wear a belt if you value your face and spine. However, I have never uah an issue with the police and a lap belt. I think they know that an old car like that most likely not have modern belts!?

The soulderbelt add on is more dangerous than it does any good.

I think none would be better than just the shoulder belt. That would be a recipe for decapitation or serious neck injury as you slid forward upon impact.

I have a car with no seat belts and don't feel safe, I especially don't like to have children in it.

In AZ the seat belt law only pertains to cars newer than 1971.

Just checked to be sure and it says in a vehicle manufactured after 1972 you are required to wear what ever is in the vehicle. So from 72 and back it's legal in Arizona to fly around inside your car during an accident!

Seat belts save lives. If I only had some photos from all the serious auto accident injury claims that came across my desk in the 20+ years I spent handling insurance claims everyone would wear their seat belts after seeing the photos that I have seen.

I worked in Salvage for a year. I know what you mean, some of the stuff I've seen was insane. I could only imagine 20+ years... Ever since I've been driving I've worn them for the most part. But other times it's gonna be a short drive at slow speeds and I am less likely to put it on. I was just asking about which ones you guys used in your C bodies.

Wow. That windshield is pretty hard stuff, i wouldnt want to kiss that with my face. I have seen some terrible accidents at the intersection around the corner from my home which had deadly results. Shortly after i put in proper belts...

I use my lap belts in my Polara, but I like the aircraft style buckles. Use them in everything newer by law.

Let's face it everyone. The sobering fact is that with seat belts or no seat belts, our older cars will result in any occupant being screwed for with surviving, being ejected from the car, or severe spinal or head injuries with the technology of the day.
We personally can do our best to be vigilant for others not being as attentive while driving to try to avoid any assidents.
This is how I felt while touring on our Goldwing. Always riding expecting someone to not being paying attention and do the best to avoid an assident.
For most of us this works even in a new car but it only takes one other driver not paying attention to change our lives.

We’re a lot safer in todays cars. I like the “Goldwing” bike riding practice mentioned above while driving my old one. If i get hit one more time by a texter i’m going off on somebody.
