Are you running points, or electronic distributor? If points, file and set the gap.

Does it idle in neutral or does i stlaa in gear I had a 292 y block would idle once in gear dies it was a funky ballast resistor just low hanging fruit before you go crazy it’s never simple!!!!

What would keep my 383 stalling trying to put it gear, it is warmed up enough. Just keeps stalling. Holley carb.

Has anyone tightened the bolts holding the carb to the manifold? It’s very easy to warp/crack the carb by over tightening those bolts. To check for this have someone sit in the car with his foot on the brakes. Then you spray foam cleaner at the base of the carb. Have assistant put car in gear while maintaining the brake. If it stays running you’ve found your problem.

adjusted the timing and set it for 18 degrees at idle, runs better. Now it wont go in any gear, checked the fluid and it is good. all the levers are moving at the tranny. Any ideas. I dont have it registered so cant drive it on the road.
