Temperature and oil pressure 440ci

My understanding is that the -3 engine was their "industrial" engine and was used on the commercial chassis line: Medium duty trucks and motor home chassis, for example. I had one in my old Travco.

Thanks for showing me the Milodon thermostat, only Summit charges very high shipping rates to Belgium/Europe ($40). I also looked at RockAuto, their thermostats seem to be much cheaper, but also poorer quality I guess.

I have a few extra questions related to the post you referred to, I hope you can answer them
  1. What exactly is the difference between a skirted thermostat and a non skirted one?
  2. Stupid question, does my 72 Imperial has a 440 3 engine? Don't know where the "3" stands for.
  3. The Milodon thermostat you recommended is differently build than for example the Gates thermostat offered by RockAuto. Both can be used for my 72 Imperial 440 ci?

OK, Post #21 answers the "440-3" engine. Don't know what the difference is between an automobile 440 and the industrial 440-3.

I believe the "skirted" T-stat is just that, it has the "skirting" around the bottom around the center section. What we generally see in T-stats and what I also use, it the flat disc type where you can see the T-stat workings in the center - no skirt hiding it from view.

I would assume the Gates T-stat is like most conventional T-stats we are all familiar with. I am sure it will work just fine and probably what most use. The "skirted" T-stat may be more like original, but I am not that much of an expert to confirm that the originals were of the skirted style.

Nice weather today, so I decided to make a trip with the Imperial.
Suddenly I was surprised to see that none of the gauges worked anymore except for the alternator. So no fuel, temperature and oil pressure gauge no more.

Is this because of a bad instrument cluster voltage regulator?
Does the instrument cluster voltage regulator controls the fuel, temperature and oil pressure gauges? I thought it only controls the fuel and temperature gauges.
Or what can cause this issue?

I searched for a new instrument cluster voltage regulator but the only one I can find is the one from Standard Motor Products. Are there other/better ones out there?

The cluster regulator controls all gauges except the alternator. Check you fuses, sometimes they get corroded on the ends from sitting and do not make contact with the clips that hold them in place. You can check this by using the continuity tester to span the clips on either end of the fuse. If you get an open circuit, either the fuse is bad or you have corrosion on the clips.

Most of the time, if a voltage regulator for the cluster is bad, it is because the breaker points inside of it have corroded. You can unplug the regulator and remove form the car. The cover of the regulator is held in place by some bend tabs that can be carefully straightened out to remove the cover. Inspect the point set, if it is blackened or corroded, the points can be cleaned with a point file or some fine sandpaper. These are fairly delicate so use care in cleaning. Reassemble the cover and reinstall the regulator and most of the time that will repair the gauges.

You can replace the old electro-mechanical regulator with a solid state 6V power supply and mate it to the plugin tabs for your old one. Much has been written about doing this and having a more reliable instrument power supply. I opted for now to just replace the whole cluster with straight mechanical gauges for temperature and oil pressure, and a voltage and after market 70 ohm gas gauge. You probably don't want to go that route with a nice looker like your Imperial but I'm happy with the data I get from my gauges.
