The Future Of Our Cars

I don't do ignore. I'm surprised he came up from the basement to type so few characters, but when one can't think, they don't have a lot to say/type. Maybe he needed to refuel.

I was having a phone conversation with another member last week about this exact situation in Kommiefornia. CARB is sending him notices about his skid steer that will need to be replaced due to age.
I've heard about this stuff coming down on them... hardship of being in CA... I am assuming it's a commercial operation of some sort, or has this bled over to the farmers already? For folks outside of CA, I don't know how long commercial vehicles will last... but private stuff should be good until you can't maintain it.

Good luck with that!

It's funny in that I just viewed a Tube video about some Phd Doctor going over the LuLaRoe MLM Cult quasi legal pyramid scheme where I think he said the wife that started the <ahem> business came from a family of 11 children... sheech, I, born in the 50's there was a idea of reducing or controlling the worlds population, and it was taught in the later grades in the primary school I attended as a child after the horror's of all the dead of WWII where it was recommended that future families should be limited to only 2 children to put the brakes on population growth.
I see all that's out the window now.

.

I'm mostly operating from a "not my problem" stance... the real poop will hit the fan after I'm gone... at least that's what I'm banking on.

Have talked with a number of folks who are prepping for something they think will happen... but I see most of those efforts as about as useful as the bomb shelters folks thought they needed in the 50's-60's. Almost wish I was making profits from ammunition sales though.

So a car from the 50s-70s' to a millennial is like a Ford T to a boomer. :poke:[/QUOTE]

This my daily driver most of the time , it baffles most people . Its a 73 to me that is a newer car .

As a personal car... the only folks you should have to argue with is your insurance company, regarding it's use as a DD. Do you still have to smog check a 73 out there?

No smog check on 75 or older 76 and up require a biannual smog inspection , no safety chk on anything. There are a very few county's that no biannual smog is required only on initial registration due to the population density of the county .

source: Rolls-Royce Spectre electric car coming in 2023

Rolls-Royce's cars are about to get even quieter than they already are. The ultra-luxury automaker has announced plans to launch its first all-electric model in the fourth quarter of 2023 as it begins the transition toward becoming a zero- emissions brand by 2030.

They (OEMs) are all far along in their exit planning, various degrees to the actual "final-ICE-off-the-line date.

Try as one might, you can't "sweep the water off the beach" as wise person once said. Zero-(carbon) emission cars are here.

But ... the car park WW is over a billion ICE's .. IMHO could be several decades (nee a century) before they are all gone (like the horse & buggy in a way).

I obviously wont live to see that day, however its 100% likely in a decade or so I will own one (an electric car) as a daily driver. My 35 year old daughter already has one (yes, she's a Californian).

The real problem is that we are ALREADY PAYING A MILEAGE TAX, but far too many people are too stupid to realize that. The more taxed fuel one consumes, the more taxes are paid. This "new" mileage tax scheme would ultimately just be a way to get road-use taxes from electric vehicles, but since I don't see the government being fair, they will use it to double tax non-electric vehicles, and ultimately will try to control who can drive where and when. Just more nanny-state tyrannical control from the "progressives" who seem to be determined to create a new dark age.

This is basically to get at the 'Leccy car owners as they don't buy gas thus no tax for the roads that they use.

London UK is proposing a tax if you drive a petrol vehicle into city limits as they want just electric vehicles in the city. I don't know how they would enforce it but as I've seen up north with the tollbooth-less turnpikes is if you don't have the EZPass transponder they just mail the bill to the cars registered owner.

Don't forget attaching road use tax to the tires, which has been played with in the past.

Regardless of how, chances are government will wind up double dipping taxes for ICE owners... how much that really will cost is probably not deal breaking... merely B.S.

1, Find a solution
2, Look for problem
3, Invest in company that will solve problem
4, Pass a law that bans problem
5, Move new solution company to China
6, Get Paid, Go looking for next problem
How California politics work

Does anyone know who the actual law makers that have written these bills?
I understand that the reason is they are after electric and hybrid cars, without actually saying they are targeting them (still want you in one they just don't want to come out and say that your the target of this tax).
Trucks have to file mileage for the states they run through and owe for miles run I that state. If you buy fuel in that state you will probably not owe tax or it is shared in you account if you bought a excess in another state. I buy all my fuel in Ohio, Pennsylvania has a higher tax rate so I end up owing at the end of the quarter. My feeling is Ohio gets rewarded for keeping road tax reasonable, and Pennsylvania can stand in line every quarter with their hand out like the ungrateful cons they are.
Every vehicle that will run with speedometer disconnected is looking more valuable. I can definitely last 20-30 years without moving to a newer vehicle, so "not my problem".
Back to California. If I buy a newer skid steer to make them happy with emissions, who is coming by to check said smog equipment after warranty runs out? Do you have to drag your equipment somewhere to have it smog checked? I realize that a large operation would be subject to OSHA type random, and tattle tales, but for a landscaper or small farm? Just asking if someone happens to know. I know there are big fines for getting caught like this, so don't waste your breath. Asking about practical enforcement.

The auto industry has/is going though this. They learned they are fighting a losing battle protecting "intellectual property" that is packaged and sold to John Q public. Once I have bought it it should be mine to do with as I please. Just like a song or movie. As long as I don't resell it in any way. The manufacturers can try this fight, but it will be more detrimental in the long run. Whichever manufacturer opens the code first will become a favorite. GM was very bad about this in the beginning of OBD 2. Everyone broke their code anyway and when they embraced it the LS popularity exploded. FCA has tried this and you can see how far behind Gen 3 hemi stuff is. And don't even get me started on their crate engine program which Chrysler in whatever management form, is terrible at.
