440-4 HP 350 horesepower

sorry that is not correct.
A U-code means it is the High performance version. In 1970 the HP rating was 375 for the U-code (E86).
In 1971 the U-code (E86) had 370 HP. In 1972 it dropped to 280 net horsepower

BUT did they come in an Imperial?

here is a link to the "oldcarbrochure" website for the 1972 Chrysler lineup

http://www.oldcarbrochures.com/stat...Line_Brochure/1972 Chrysler Full Line-34.html

there were two 440 engines shown, a single exhaust and a dual exhaust version. Could be E85 and E86 (T and U code) options? and the dual exhaust engine is not shown for the "Imperial" model. Could have been true all model year or just at the time of the brochure printing and it became available later?

Curious tho, why the top of line C-body wouldn't have the hot engine available? Except for the Town & Country, the other cars apparently could get the 440 with dual exhaust as options all year it seems. I guess i would've wanted my Imperial tricked out with the biggest and best of everything..and leaning on my local dealer hard to get me "one of them TNT motors."

I'm not trying to ignite a tangent thread herein as it could be for a lot of reasons, if true, that no E86's could be had in Imperials..they didn't get the model-specific engineering/validation work done, some sort of packaging issue underhood, an "emissions" problem, or they just plain never wanted to offer it....who knows? If somebody knows for sure maybe he/she will tell us.

I too was curious, after Polara71 made his observation, as to what it was I saw 24 years ago once. I know it had dual exhaust that looked factory, and I know it had "U" in VIN, and it was unmistakeably an Imperial...but I never raised the hood to see engine or option tag plate. So I guess until one shows up, in the flesh so to speak, the answer may not be truly known.
End of the day to me, whether it was a T or U code, I still wanted it. It was a beautiful car. :love7:

no u-code/E86 engines on 69&up Imperials AFAIK

Dual exhaust has nothing to do with it. Check out 1970 SFGTs which had only basic T-Code (E85) engines but dual exhaust

Glad to see this thread is staying on topic... :D LOL!!

Interesting stuff here!

Thanks. The "data" seems to confirm that. Excerpt from "1969 Imperial Data Book" (courtesy of the Imperial Club site) below. No TNT's in Imperials offered but still optional in some of the other C's '69-'72 (didnt look at '73 but would not expect that year to be any different than previous four years).

Still curious to me as to why, but simplest answer is probably Chrysler wanted the Imperial to be "different". E85 "T" codes were plenty potent enough to carry the mail in any C-body, so E86's may not have been in the brand image of "Imperial" versus the "300"?

I'm done with this one...until a verified real live "U' code fuselage-years Imperial turns up somewhere.

i'm sorry sir. i started this detour inadvertently trying to honor the theme of the thread with the "one that got away" from me. i'm pretty sure what I saw, but the until this mythical U-code fuselage Imperial beastie sits down for the camera, she's on the same footing as "I saw Bigfoot once.":icon_redface:

it was interesting tho..hottest 440 (six pack excluded of course) engine not offered in the "flagship" model. 1970 Caddy is over there with 500 cubes, Lincolns with 460's .. guess Chrysler had their reasons.

I think this one might be beat down...maybe we will see some more "loves lost" as the thread continues. thakns

Ok, I was half correct. I did say HP, just got the rating wrong.

personal opinion:
the HP engines have a "sharper" cam. That continues a little rougher idling. I guess it has an influence to the decision as anything which might disturb the comfortable ride could have been deleted by the factory.

In the same connection you have got an AC running and lots of electric helpers in an Imperial. All that don't works to well when hot idling in "D", engne rumbling with 600rpm and the Mopar alternators& electrical system

No apologies needed, I'm learning a lot here!

It's just like situations & plans in life.

We start here intending to go there but end up away over on the other side!

Did I ever mention I love coffee?:lotsocoffee:
