The Sport Fury S/23: how many survived?

Uh oh, there goes the thread.....

One of those red one's was probably mine at one point. It was a N-code car, that the engine was used for a roadrunner, and the roller sold at the nats, in the late 80's.

Hey Mike, I didnt know you were over here!

Great thread. Didnt really know much about the S/23, but the more I learn, the more Im falling in love!

An S/23 picture on the "440 Magnum" site which I also identified as the same scar captured in a picture taken at Carlisle 2003

This car is just as nice in person. I saw it back in the early 90's and knew the owner.

I've owned 2 SFGTs. No pics. Both were back when they weren't worth anything. The first was white with black top/black interior. This was late 70's. The right side had wiped a telephone pole. It was originally a 4bbl car and I bought it for the 6 barrel setup that had been on the car for many years. I swapped an AVS and manifold and ended up using the car as a tow vehicle. The years took their toll and I sold it. The last time I saw the car, it was sitting in a back yard. It's been gone for years.

The second one was red with black top/black interior. I used to see the car all the time and had lusted over it and the blond MILF that drove it. I got a call from a friend one day around 1984 or so asking if I wanted the car. It had become rusted to the point of not being street worthy. The rear leaf spring had pushed through the trunk floor. It was so bad, I jacked the car up and the jack collapsed the frame rail and popped up through the back seat. It could not be saved.... Even now, it would just be a parts car. I stripped it and junked the body. The engine and trans were sold.

I have no VINs for either car.

Thanks Trev...I was leaning more towards "prove it"

So what Dave,.......am I lying?

Here's the a link to the link, which is now deleted because the car sold in about 2 days. It was a very decent car, undervalued at $3500 in my opinion.

No Trev.......:poke:
Of course not. ..it was more of a provocation to produce the ad and photos that we all wanna see.

transmission didn't go into reverse, was parked for a while. Minor rust through in rear lower quarters but a lot of rust under the v-roof on the c-pillars on the green S23

Very true,.. Not difficult to repair items. It sold CHEAP!!!!

It appears there are some members who are not aware of the S/23... like I was until i accidentally bought one thinking I was getting just a Sport Fury I could use for parts.

Anyone who would like to ad details about the S/23 model, like production numbers, options, personal stories... please enlighten the readership who don't know.
I was glad to see some members could fill in the blanks on what became of some of these cars -any one else know anything, please share. :)

WOW. I'm really surprised by the interest in the S/23 by some of the members... so i did some digging to bring more "to the table" for those who want the details....
Now before I begin, I am no “guru” on the S/23, but these are the details I have “fleshed out” of my cursory foray into the misty murky world relative to the archeology of extinct 1970 Sport Fury S/23’s.
NOTE: regarding any errors in my details: If YOU know better than me, YOU should have been adding these details instead of waiting for me to do it pal!! Nevertheless, PUH-Leese feel free to make corrections and dissertate more completely on the matter.

The S/23 seems to have had two engine options: a 318 and a 383. 440CI 4bbl and -of course- the 6bbl (for Plymouth "6bbl" and not "6-pack" was the designation) was not an option. I’m not certain about the 318 as its only a recollection from one example -and I haven’t found that detail again- so I don’t know if the 318 I saw was an engine swap or a customer order.

The 318 was 2BBL only (so far) and the 383CI was available with 2BBL and 4BBL carburetor given I have seen both listed as part of the description by owners of these cars. The 2BBL 383 was the "Commando" V8, not a Magnum or a TNT. 4BBL 383 was "super commando" according to one source.

I can't say for sure whether the Plymouth fury 383 HP engine used the Chrysler blue paint or the orange -I don't know. Seems like for the 318/383 2BBL S/23 the Chrysler blue would be the standard whereas for 383 hi-po, the orange would be the standard?

Note the dual snorkel air cleaner. 4bbl 383 came with the dual snork unit but I have no information on whether the 2bbl engines were delivered with one. I would say no, since 2bbl is not consistent with the 383 "Hi-Perf" option.
I have seen 3 different types of dual snorks on these cars: bare aluminum color, shiny black like the Super Bee dual snorkel, and THIS one with the dull black crinkle finish and I'm given to understand the crinkle black is the correct factory finish for GT and S/23.

Oh boy i can just hear the "corrections" comin! lol.

The roof line on the GT and S/23 is the "fast back" type. The standard Sport Fury with the concave (inward curving) back glass is what i think they refer to as the formal roof line?
It gets confusing because I have seen an ordinary Sport Fury with the fast back roof as well, much like the standard fury I,II,II!
Its possible what I saw was a Gran Fury, since the Gran Fury kept the rap-around bumper and hide-away headlights of its Sport fury cousins, but also kept the fast back roof.

As far as I can tell from the reading, its "just" a sport fury NOT an S/23 or a GT if it has the formal roof line!

-this is a very nicely done GT "clone" made from a standard Sport Fury... it was located in Canada and I believe it may have been owned by one of the membership?
