Tightening up the steering box

If you haven't already, I would get the car on a rack and inspect all steering components for wear or defects first before making any adjustments to the steering gearbox. If the gearbox is that sloppy, I would replace it.

I agree with above....my '59 Imperial kept on leaking P.S. fluid badly, new seal did not help. Enough play inside that it needed to be rebuilt. Contact "Steer and Gear", if I remember correctly $400 plus for my car, plus shipping and core. Then add the mechanics labor.
