Took a cool pic?

Rolling into a nasty storm last night, got these with the cell.

The complete rainbow was cool to see. Yep plenty of hail, and no visibility so pulled into a farm yard and parked near a cottonwood tree.

shoot man..missed the rainbow as a natural occurence.

there was some sunlight coming from somewhere (i see it now..behind you?) but since it looked so dark with the storm front approaching, I first thought it might be oil streak from wipers inteacting with residue on windshield

still a cool pic. thx for clarifying :icon_thumleft:

I have been passing this thing for at least a dozen years, NEVER knew what is was, and finally stopped to get a good look.

On the QEW (Queen Elizabeth Way) in Ontario Canada (between Hamilton and Niagara Falls, off Lake Ontario) you see this derelict ship as you pass by Jordan Harbor.

I happened to be there to get these shots when some intrepid urban explorers (twenty-something year olds) decided board this boat. Why I asked one of them? "Its a huge-a-morph..we gotta check it out".

Anyway, here's what I took after my land-based urban exploration.

Last..so what is this thing anyway and how did it get here.

There are no signs so its not a formal attraction, and the kids who boarded it only knew it was a "huge-a-morph".

For the curious like me, there's the Internet. Here's the story of the La Grande Hermine:
"La Grande Hermine" (The Big Weasel) is one of the most recognizable landmarks along the Niagara stretch of the Queen Elizabeth Way. The 140 foot ship was created as a replica of the largest of 3 ships French Explorer Jacques Cartier sailed up the St. Lawrence River. It was originally built in Quebec in 1914 and began its life as a ferry on the St. Lawrence and later became a cargo ship, a floating restaurant, and in 1991 converted to a replica ship. At one time the vessel was turned into a haunted pirate ship at Halloween to raise money for a hot lunch program for students. The derelict ship's final resting place is the Jordan Harbour just off the western shore of Lake Ontario, between the cities of Hamilton and St. Catharines. This abandoned shipwreck came to the Jordan Harbour in 1997, and was the victim of an arson fire in January of 2003, causing this piece of history to go up in smoke. What's left of the ship remains rusting, damaged and run down, but is still an interesting site to see. It was towed to the Jordan Harbour to await further relocation to a spot near Niagara Falls in hopes of turning it into a gambling venue, but the owner passed away before permission was received. This shipwreck has since been a distinctive landmark and favourite roadside attraction to many, and also referred to as 'the pirate ship' in Niagara. This little understood landmark tilts strongly to one side as it half sits and half floats, only a few metres off the shoreline in the small artificial cove of the Jordan Harbour.

this video is 11 minutes...a lady who went onboard and documented it. "urban explorers:...subject for another thread..no place these folks won't go.

After seeing the Boat, Jordan Harbor Marina was kinda picturesque too. These are looking northerly across Lake Ontario.

The horizon shots (last two photos) were trying to catch the City of Toronto on the north shore of Lake Ontario.

It was just too hazy so while the naked eye could pick out the faint shadows to the Toronto skyline through the haze, alas the smartphone could not.

The shot (not mine) of what I was trying to capture below. My guess its about 20 miles as the crow flies (or straight across the lake by boat) so you need a clear day. CN Tower to the left, main part of downtown Toronto on right.

Nice posts, I've past that a bunch of times and always wondered...

Same stretch of road, on the 402 just east of Sarnia Ontario, same day. Not often I can do that..or am forced to do that (making the drive in a single day).

Route 402 outside Strathroy Ontario Canada. Little refractory "rainbow" in the leading edge of clouds of an approaching weather front.

Sorry about the windshield bugs...constant feature of Great Lakes travel in the summer for those of us in this area.

Looks awfully familiar.

Talk about very similar pictures. These were taken Sept 2012.

we've stood in the same spot - again! for the second time, and got the exact same shot :laughing4:

your top photo cannot be taken as clearly today..the shoreline vegetation has over-grown to obscure somewhat that view from up near the road.

i almost needed a machete to get down to the lakeshore. i watched the kids wade into the harbor on what looked like man-made (they were square) rocks with "seaweed" all around them.

then one guy said he was on the bottom in about chest-high water. he took one more step and promptly went under. he bobbed right back up but water depth was 10+ feet around the wreck.

all of them after they boarded were pulling slimy looking "seaweed" off themselves.

i dunno brother.

i mean yeah we may be have been to many of the same places, but back in my "master of the universe" days I went a lotta places for work stuff...and NEVER saw anything but airports, conference rooms, hotels, and restaurants.

i'm sure i missed things that you may have caught...my work excuse nothwithstanding ... cuz you were paying attention when i wasnt. :happy8:
