Took a cool pic?

Another sunset. This time in Hawaii.

I am finding all kinds of stuff while scanning years of slides. I took this in March of '79. This place has been closed for over 20 years.

Crappy phone picture on my way to work a few weeks ago, but the clouds were strange and impressive in person.

Possible for any of you with an interest, a viewing vantage point of the sky that's broad and not light-polluted, are up early enough, and have a darn good camera, to catch the five planets (Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter, and Saturn) that ALL will be visible at same time for next few weeks?

I tried on Jan 20th but it was overcast from my viewing spot.

Per our friends at NASA (printed in NY Times), diagram above (with a view of solar system we really can't see from above, but shows planet positions in orbit that translates into "line of sight" appearance in Earth's sky) and then excerpt of article below:

"The show was expected to run from Jan. 20 until Feb. 20, but the peak time to see all five is from the end of January until the first week of February, when Mercury is at its highest points. The display is made possible by the uncommon alignment of all five planets along what is called the “ecliptic” plane of their orbits, according to Jim Green, the planetary science division director at NASA.

Over five weeks, each planet will appear one by one across the sky of the Northern Hemisphere. As it did Wednesday morning January 20th, Jupiter will rise first, emerging sometime at night, while the other four planets will make their debuts in the wee hours of the morning. Mars rises second, then Saturn and then Venus — the brightest orb — followed finally by Mercury, which appears about an hour before sunrise.

Each morning display will last until the sun comes up and makes it too bright to see the planets, typically around 7 a.m."

here's a better diagram from USA Today with planets labeled and as they will appear if you catch it (and some really bright stars that might trick ya). The color of the dots in the diagram is helpful as, if your shutter device is good enough, Mars will look "reddish", Jupiter "yellowish", etc.

THIS IS NOT MINE...but people are getting the shots.

its been cloudy EVERY MORNING...(i was out there again this morning with no luck...beautiful sunrise because OF the clouds tho) in my neck of the woods.

I don't have an unobstructed southern view close to my house either...too many trees...but I am still gonna try. gonna drive around next clear morning and give it another go.

Mercury will be the hard one (depending on your latitude/elevation), cuz it MAY be close to the rising sun when its at its highest in the sky so you may only have a 15 min window before the sunrise blocks it out.

You can also see Antares and Spica trying to be Saturn and Mars respectively.

The planets are almost on a 25-40 degree angle and Venus will always be the brightest. find it, you find them all along that diagonal.

And sunrise will surely be easterly (left) of ALL the planets, so look diagonally up to the right of where the sun is rising

hope one or more of you can get this one...like a few of you caught the "Blood Moon" .. cuz it'll be a decade before we can do it again in Northern Hemisphere :)

I noticed them before I had read it on the Moparts board. I thought, that's strange, never seen that before. Of course they look like stars but still a peculiar alignment.

A hilltop would be needed to get a good shot

yup..that's exactly right. need a hill, or a vast flat plain of several miles southerly around wherever you are.

i have a couple of hills (near the arena where the Detroit Pistons play - on a clear day/night we can see downtown Detroit about 30 miles away from that hill) about 10 miles from my house in mind.

if not, i won't be able to get the shot

Back to Cool Photos, One of my favorites of my Barracuda...

Practically in my back yard, Jalama Beach, always a fun drive out there and great burgers, well worth the 15 mile drive off the highway.

I think I got it...maybe. First clear morning in a week, I could be "tricked" by stars/atmospherics, etc.

Gotta go back out and "repeat the shots, about 10 minutes earlier.. its too close to sunrise (orange tints messin' up what I believe to be Mars), there are low clouds on horizon, light pollution from the "burbs" to the south, etc.,

Anyway, I took these this morning, January 30, 2016, 7 am, roughly SE to SW arc coverage, widest angle (not panoramic though) on digital camera, "NIGHT" shutter setting.

In order, first pic is full frame shot with planets marked, second is zoom-in, cropped shot of first pic (I know, still can't see much), and then highly magnified shots of second pic and what I think is big old "yellow" Jupiter in the SSW sky, and tiny Mercury low and near the sunrise in SSE sky.
