So today I had no work( Electrical Contractor), I thought it would be a good idea to replace that leaky shifter seal. Knowing the tool I bought was not as advertized, I went to my local Home Depot and got a carbide bit for my Dremel. 2 hours later and a lot of back and forth under car(checking clearance) I was able to excise that nasty offending seal. Turns out installing the new seal was going to be a bit of a chore. I just could not get any leverage or angle to get that thing to fully seat evenly. It is a good thing I bought 2 seals, because the 2nd one fit better and seated well. Now for the bad news. I did, in fact, have to remove the pan, valve assembly and whatnot because of the trouble removing seal. Anyhow, got it all back together, new gasket, new fluid. Fired it up and guess what? No leaks (will know for sure in the morning, but things are looking good at this point). The bad news is I have also created a new problem. When shifting, the column shifter does not click into gears. It just sort of slides into the location. Tranny does work, goes into reverse, park, drive, etc, but there is no locking into gear. I think maybe I need to retrace my steps tomorrow and remove linkage first and try moving shift mechanism on tranny to see whats up. I will say that everything was working fine and I believe still is but somewhere in reassembly I did something wrong. Any thoughts on this issue? Thanks for any input.

Sounds like you my have lost the ball for the Rooster comb.

The pan was off and secured in a different location while I was replacing seal. Had to remove assembly as tool didnt work. I already moved car this morning and scoured work area searching for it. No luck. I should be so lucky, that would have been the first place to look. Any ideas on where to find a replacement?

It may have fallen into drip pan.Lucky I havent recycled oil yet. Will check tomorrow, hopefully its at the bottom of a big Gatorade jug.

Every tool box should have one.

Got one in the kitchen. The wife wont even know its missing.

I went to Home Depot and bought a carbide bit for my dremel. reamed the dog out of the inside to get it to fit. It did eventually work but tapping new seal in is what must have dislodged rooster comb ball/spring assembly. Good news is this morning I removed trans and voila there was ball and spring. Having a tough time getting all back together. Heres a tip: use super glue gel to fasten ball to spring. Soon it will come loose but it will help in attaching to gear without having three hands trying to accomplish the difficult.

A nice thick dollop of grease will also help hold things in place...in motors, trannies and diffs.

I've done this seal a few times. I just pull the pan, loosen the valve body, swing all the rods and shifter mechanisms down and around. The use a big flat screw driver and a small hammer to punch the old seal up and out. The use a big C-clamp and a couple flat washers to press the new seal down and into place.

Thanks Brian, please see my next post. Fixed 2 problems. Created yet another. Tranny detent ball/ spring now back in place. Shifts great however car does not move in any gear. Im leaning towards the detent linkage? heading back to back of tranny as I removed entire assembly to fix ball/spring. I think maybe I reinstalled that incorrectly however it only seemed to fit 1 way.I had to wiggle it around quite a bit for it to find its spot. Please advise if you think I reinstalled that part correctly or incorrectly.Or if you think it could be something else.Appreciate all the great advice from all of you.
