I would like to ditch the cast iron automatic transmission in my '61 Chrysler for a later model aluminum case 727.
My question is, can the newer model 727 be modified to work with the pushbutton tranny buttons?
I know it won't bolt to the current motor as the 361 in it now won't bolt to the newer tranny. I have a later model 413 that I'm looking to use and get away from that antique tranny. Getting harder to fix and find parts to make that happen. Local tranny shops have no clue to it. They couldn't change that one year earlier. Grrrrrr.
 
imperialclub.org has some good info on this topic. I believe I have read somewhere that it can be modified to use a lighter spring so you can use the pushbutton.
 
Last year for pushbutton 727s was 1964, as '65s had to have the common shift quadrant and column shift. Aluminum case 727s started in 1962, as I recall. So, pushbutton aluminum case 727s are "somewhere".

You need a 62 Chrysler trans. One year only. First year for the 727 aluminum case, last year for parking brake on the tailshaft. No Park. Bolts in.

Thanks, Kevin. I'm going in search of a '63-'65 as I want to ditch that brake on the tailshaft. It doesn't have much ability to slow the car in an emergency. Mostly to hold the car after stopping. I'm changing the rear end to a B Body mopar and moving the E brake to the wheels. I want the slip joint driveshaft also. I'll never sell this car, so I want it like I want it. Not a purist on this one. Customizing to NY tastes.
If you know of one clue me in.

Seems like somebody is doing conversion driveshafts to do what you desire?

65 will get you the slip yoke, another one year only deal. You won't have a park capability with the 61 shifter. The tailshaft brake was in reality just a parking brake.

Setting up the shift cable on a 65 is done in a different gear position than the pushbutton trans. Not sure if John Kunkel is a member here but he is on Moparts and has the procedure. I think you adjust it in neutral position but I'm not sure.
