U-haul trailers

I'm not averse to risk, but if you know what the trailers and dollies cost to replace, you might think twice.
I absolutely do, sir.

And U-Haul will claim the trailer that is worn out, was at the end of its serviceable life span two years ago and should be taken out of servce will magically be worth $20,000.00 Yes sir, I understand that.

Just so you know, if the tow vehicle and/or the car being hauled ate not on the list, you are denied. There are valid reasons why they do this. They are not going to simply rent you a dolly or hauler to make the sale. They have to protect their equipment. If that takes renting one of their trucks to pull the hauler then that's what it takes. I sold trailers for seven years, and am quite familiar with the stupid **** people do "because they can". I also know a couple that got killed when a jackass had an overloaded trailer pop off the ball and cross over into their lane, hitting themhead-on and killing them. So, forgive me if I don't congratulate some of you for your ingenuity.

Nor should you congratulate me. I am not looking for a medal. I appreciate your awareness of the totality of the consequences.

If you find yourself out on the course in a lightning storm hold up a 1 iron.....not even GOD can hit a 1 iron....:)

They will probably check out your tow vehicle when you are renting the trailer. They may most likely deny you if your truck isn't listed. You can rent one of their trucks if that happens.

BTW, ALWAYS get the extra collision insurance on a rental truck. I found out the hard way that your credit card or personal vehicle insurance doesn't cover trucks like it will cars.

I've been involved with two accidents with rental vehicles. One was 100% my fault and the other was 100% not my fault (hit my personal vehicle). Both were nightmares. Everybody says "don't worry" and that's great until something happens.

Enough about that.... Why don't you take the glass out yourself? It's not rocket surgery. I've seen other work that you've done.... You can do this.

Let me put it this way....even if I had a 93 c3500 it says no, but if I have a 93 k1500 it says yes.....

Why is a 4WD acceptable but not my 2WD? They have the same towing capacity.

I'm towing the car a total of 15 miles round trip.....

Why am I having the glass pulled by a pro? Simple the lamination on the windshield is seperating, and my shop is freezing cold......what's the success rate of my windshield in that scenario.....slim....

Part 2, you CANNOT purchase a replacement windshield for this car and I don't have a spare.....

I've towed my own trailer with my truck and my car hundreds of miles with no issues.....

I'll get right on driving the car to Oshawa.....

I just wanted to make sure it fit, the last car I had on a Uhaul trailer was a 70 H code Duster.......

U-haul has a vehicle to tow vehicle ratio list for trailer rentals. Best policy.... State you have a full size, 4X4 pickup and need to tow a Aspen or VW.
All you really need is good common sense.

Thanks Will, when I said lie to them I meant tell them my truck is a 4x4. For what I'm doing I could safely do it with a Fiat 500. The car will have no drivetrain and is pretty much gutted.

Just have the car transported, it can't cost that must to have a flatbed load it up.

This thread makes me miss the days when I just popped into UHaul and grabbed one of these for something like $20...

I pulled a lot of iron around behind these things...

A buddy had one of those clamp-style towbars...used to flat-tow his '71 Hemi Challenger to the races with it. Numbers-matching car, BTW! I used it a few times, too. Great bit of equipment, but useless on anything with a bumper cover, obviously.

Majority of the U haul retained lawyers believe a 4 WD is superior.
That's my best crappy explanation.
That or they are stick to the theory that the tow vehicle needs to weigh as much or more than the trailer car combo. If you lower the car weight more like a 78 ply horizon does your truck become okay.

This will make you wonder how accurate their criteria is... I poked around a bit with the Uhaul tool.

It did accept a 93 c3500 crewcab 2wd

It did accept my 99 1500 suburban 2wd

It refused a 93 1500 suburban 2wd.... which is the same truck as my 99

I think they just make it up as they go...

Patrick is correct about the legal aspect... but I find it a bit hard to believe an engineer is involved in this. More likely an insurance company number cruncher figuring out how much more likely the older truck is to file a claim.

The equipment companies used to give me small amounts of grief when I rented a lift bed trailer to move my tool box behind my 93 roadmaster too... and that was always a low speed scary ride...

I don't think there's any logic or reason that goes into the determination. As I said, in 2014, my 2012 Ram 2500 4x4 was not recommended to tow my 69 Sport Fury on an auto transport. I tried it today and now it is recommended. Nothing changed with either vehicle. I think it's all about how much money they can sucker out of you.
